The new PowerVR Series8XT GT8540 GPU uses Imagination Technologies' Furian architecture and provides an 80 percent fill rate gain over its predecessor. Even more, it can feed up to six 4K displays at 60 fps simultaneously.

Thanks to the advances in the automotive field, the need for mobile GPUs continues to grow, so it should not be surprising that Imagination Technologies has introduced a solution that can drive up complex imagery at 60 fps on up to six 4K screens. Dubbed PowerVR Series8XT GT8540, this four-cluster GPU has been designed using Imagination's Furian architecture.

The Furian architecture has been unveiled last year, in early March. This is the first new PowerVR architecture in five years, so it should not be surprising that the PowerVR Series8XT GT8540 delivers a fill rate increase of 80 percent when compared to its predecessor.

According to the official press release, "the new four-cluster PowerVR Series8XT enables automotive OEMs to deliver secure, high-performance graphics capabilities for a vehicle’s many displays." Leaving the automotive applications aside, Imagination says that the new PowerVR Series8XT GT8540 GPU can also provide an excellent AR/VR experience to smartphones, phablets, and tablets.

The first Furian-based solution, a two-cluster GPU known as the GT8525, is already being used by customers in the automotive and mobile fields. The PowerVR Series8XT GT8540 is now ready for licensing as well, but it might take a while for the first applications that use it to reach the market.
