NEC squeezes a 99.9 Wh battery into a 999 g laptop, claims two-day runtime without a charger

NEC Personal Computers has folded its two corporate PC brands, Mate and VersaPro, into the consumer LAVIE line and used the relaunch to show off a notebook built around a genuinely unusual specification pairing: a 999-gram body carrying a 99.9 Wh battery.

The flagship LAVIE BM94C tops NEC’s seven-model business refresh. Under JEITA 3.0 testing, it is rated for roughly 30.5 hours of video playback and up to 50.8 hours at idle—figures NEC says are enough to leave the charger at home for an overnight trip.

Getting a battery that large into a sub-kilogram chassis required new materials engineering in collaboration with Toray. The base panel uses an aerospace-grade carbon laminate with resin-reinforced edges, while the lid pairs the same carbon layup with a new ultralight core that Toray has not previously supplied, sandwiched between layers of glass-fiber-reinforced resin. NEC is also relying on software to protect the battery over the long term: an AI charging profile is designed to retain around 72.7% of its capacity after five years. It also offers 30-minute fast charging that provides enough power for a full eight-hour day, as well as a one-tap power-saving mode.

Configurations include Core Ultra 5 (322/335) or Ultra 7 355 processors, up to 32 GB of LPDDR5X memory, an SSD of up to 1 TB, and a 14-inch 1920×1200 panel. Port selection is respectable for the weight class: two Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, HDMI, and Gigabit Ethernet. It also comes with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. It ships in late July, with prices starting at ¥584,100 (roughly $3,600).
