Reviews for the Motorola Moto G7
Compared to its predecessor, the Motorola Moto G7 reaches new heights with more performance and more storage. The price remains the same, which makes Motorola's new mid-range smartphone very attractive.

Archive.org versionEditors' note, March 28, 2020: In 2020, Motorola shook up its approach to the Moto G family of budget phones. And if you're pondering whether or not to get a Moto G7, consider that in February, two new budget phones were announced: The Moto G Stylus and Moto G Power. At this time there's no word on when the phones will actually ship.

Archive.org versionIn fact, the phone exceeded my expectations in almost every way. Thanks to its big, inviting screen, thoughtful design, ultra-reliable biometrics, and intuitive software, I'm happy to recommend it to anyone; that it's $300 is a bonus. That is, if you can live with software updates that happen infrequently at best.

Archive.org versionMotorola's latest midrange offering doubles down on performance and packs a killer display, but so-so battery life and an awkward design hold this phone back.

Archive.org versionAn outstanding display, clean Android 9 Pie with thoughtful Moto additions and improved cameras mean this is the best G series phone yet and the G7 phone you should buy. There are three other G7 phones in the series but the G7’s price and features mean it’s the best for most people. Tad annoying it’s an Amazon exclusive in the UK, though.

Archive.org versionThe Moto G7 is a good phone for those who want a device that can last the entire day, offer a smooth experience and is easy to use. It's also quite affordable and cleverly disguised as a premium device.

Archive.org versionThe Moto G7 looks amazing, feels amazing, and performs pretty well for the price range. The low tier camera can be forgiven when so many other aspects were knocked out of the park. For $299, it’s really hard to complain when you get a USB-C port, a headphone jack, and an awesome display. However, there are a few issues that really hurt the experience. The poor network performance and the charging issues in particular are unacceptable at any price point. The battery life was a disappointment as well, despite the sizeable battery. For $100 more, you can get yourself a Pixel 3a and get better performance and a stellar camera in exchange for a dated design and far inferior build quality. For $50 less, you can pick up an Honor X series device which will definitely have a better camera and better battery life. However, the G7 remains a solid purchase. We just hope Motorola won’t drop the ball with updates.

Archive.org versionDespite a few grumbles around performance, I’ve been really impressed with the overall capability of the Motorola G7. For $399 it’s a fantastic phone and well worth the investment if you’re after a new phone on a budget, or perhaps a second/back up phone for yourself or your family in general.

Archive.org versionThe Moto G7 is more-or-less exactly what you expect. It’s not a radical reinvention of what the company's central pitch to mid-tier and budget customers is - but it probably shouldn’t be. This time around, Motorola have been smarter in the ways in which their smartphone experience is better. The sleek software, extra storage and more powerful CPU combine to make a big difference in terms of how usable the Moto G7 is and honestly, when you consider those qualities it’s not hard to make the case for this over other, more-expensive devices.

Archive.org versionBoth the G7 and the G7 Power offer great devices for Moto to add to its lineup for 2019. However, they target a need for two different people depending on their preference. Do you want a sleeker design with slightly better internals, screen, and camera? Then you should buy the G7 standard.

Archive.org versionMight I recommend these phones? Motorola has mastered the art of bringing value and appeal together. Not everyone can afford $1,000 flagships. I am grateful that Motorola keeps all consumers in mind. The 2019 G7 series are solid, budget-friendly devices that anyone should be proud to carry around. You can get yours via the button below.

Archive.org versionThe Moto G7 is the best budget phone we've tried hands down. The Motorola Moto G7 has a slick contemporary design, a dewdrop notch display, decent dual rear cameras, turbo charging, solid battery life and a near-stock version of Android 9 Pie making it worth every penny.

Archive.org versionTo me, the G7 Power really feels like the Moto G7 to get. Its battery life is incredible and worth the cost-cutting that Motorola did elsewhere. When you’ve got a $250 phone that’s plenty good at a smartphone’s core duties and can handily outlast a Galaxy S10 Plus or iPhone XR, that’s pretty special.

Archive.org versionThe Moto G7 and Moto G7 Power offer excellent value. You're getting a great design, modern features, and clean and fast software. For the price, Motorola elegantly balances performance and features without making too many compromises. The Moto G7 will give you the best that Motorola has to offer in the G7 series while the Moto G7 Power focuses on extended battery life.

Archive.org versionDespite its shortcomings, the Moto G7 remains a good value. Few phones, even at $299, guarantee the level of performance and software polish that Motorola is offering, and the fact that the G7 is compatible with every carrier under the sun in the U.S. is a notable plus, too.

Archive.org versionAnd in fact, the Moto G7 is probably a worthy upgrade from the G6. There's a massive performance boost from this model, with its Snapdragon 632 chipset. The cool thing is that with the Moto G series, you actually can upgrade your phone every year without breaking the bank, and I think you'll be happy if you do just that this year.

Archive.org versionThe Moto G7 is a great budget phone that improves over its predecessor. Its problem is the G7 Plus which is £30 more and delivers faster charging, optical stabilisation for its better cameras, and a minor bump in processor - making it the phone to buy (after all, they both have the same design and screen sizes).

Comment
Model: The Motorola G series was one of the first budget friendly smartphones from a major manufacturer. It defined the price to performance ratio with its high specs and near stock Android experience. The G7 has been improved quite substantially over the previous generations. This one follows the 2018-2019 trend with its tear drop notch and very slim bezels. The phone measures in at 157 x 75.3 x 8 mm which is quite compact for its 6.2 inch screen. The screen is an IPS LCD with a resolution of 1.080 x 270 pixels. The screen is covered by a much older Gorilla Glass 3. Considering the price point, it should be good enough to provide some decent scratch resistance. The front part is mostly screen with the tear drop notch and ‘Motorola’ branding underneath the screen. Why did they choose this spot for the branding is still a question. At the back of the phone is the familiar Motorola logo, which smartly doubles as a fingerprint reader. The cameras are placed in a circular ring just like the older generations. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 octa core processor coupled with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage powers the phone. Storage can be expanded via the dedicated micro SD slot.
As for the camera, at the back, there is a dual camera setup. The first one is a 12 MP f/1.8 camera and the second is a 5 MP depth sensor. It can shoot videos at 4K resolution. The front single camera captures at a resolution of 8 MP and records videos in Full HD. Colors from the rear camera are very close to real, but it has a pretty narrow dynamic range. According to various reviews, night shots aren’t great too, but it gets the job done. The phone has a 3.5 mm audio jack and Bluetooth 4.2 for pairing up other devices. The G7 has a very low 3,000 mAh battery, which supports quick charging via its Type-C port. Some users and reviewers have reported that the G7 barely lasts for half a day with heavy usage. It is sold in ceramic black or clear white colors at a very affordable price. The G7 may be one of the cheaper lower-midrange options out there in the market. However, it faces stiff competition from Samsung’s Galaxy A line up, particularly the Galaxy A50 which is priced very closely to the G7. The A50 has a Super AMOLED display which is much better than the one in G7. Motorola G7’s advantage though is its software superiority over Samsung.
