Redmi = affordable. Offering a good price-to-performance ratio has been Xiaomi's formula of success in the past. The Redmi 7 is no exception: It is available for around $150 and has quite a lot to offer. However, its competition is right on its heels. Find out how the Redmi 7 fares in our review.

Xiaomi Redmi 7 Review

So who is Redmi 7 for, do we recommend it at a starting price of Rs. 7,999? We would recommend Redmi Note 7 3/32 variant over Redmi 7 in case you find it in stock as it brings a lot more to the table for just Rs. 1000 more than the 3/32 Redmi 7 variant, but sadly, Xiaomi has decided to discontinue Redmi Note 7 after the Redmi Note 7S launch in the country. If you can not stretch your budget and still want for a good-looking smartphone with the latest dot-notch display, decent performance and good battery life for the price, then Redmi 7 is the smartphone to go for, but we will not recommend getting 2GB RAM variant as MIUI is a heavy Android skin. The phone is now on open sale across Amazon.in, Mi.com and Mi Home stores. In this price range, Redmi 7’s competitors are Asus Zenfone Max M2, Realme C2, and Nokia 5.1 Plus.

The Redmi 7 offers a good load of value for its price. The budget Xiaomi phone does surprisingly well on the display and camera fronts. Its performance too is up to the mark. PUBG Mobile players on a budget should be quite happy with its ability to push pixels. All things considered, the Redmi 7 really is a fairly good all-rounder. What’s its Achilles heel then? Build quality, easily, especially on the back. I wish the edge of the rear panel didn’t threaten to scratch my finger every time I lifted the phone up.

Xiaomi Redmi 7 Review

The Redmi 7 does offer better features and performance as compared to its predecessors. The design is refreshing, while the performance is quite satisfactory. The daylight performance of the camera is good, though, in low light, it shimmers. The battery is impressive in our opinion. That said, you can actually buy Redmi Note 7 by adding just Rs 1,000. So, if you are ready to tolerate its misses and especially the advertisement, then you can think of this phone as your next budget smartphone.

Xiaomi Redmi 7 review: Strong build and sleek design, but camera a dampener
Source: Business Standard English Archive.org version
At Rs 7,999, Redmi 7 has the feel of a phone that costs way above its price. If you are looking for a great camera, this is not a buy for you. However, if you seek a phone that can last long on one charge and endure falls, this Redmi phone is the right choice.

With a decent design, Gorilla Glass 5, quick processor, the Xiaomi Redmi 7 is a great successor to Redmi 6 and even to Redmi 6 Pro at this price. Samsung Galaxy M20 can be a good alternative but it lets down for its Exynos 7870 chip. But, if you willing to shell out a couple of 1,000 bucks more, you can purchase the Redmi Note 7 for Rs 11,990 which has slightly improved specs.

For its price, Redmi 7 is certainly an excellent package. What stood out was the battery and the overall device performance, which is above average in this price segment. Yes, the phone’s camera performance could be better, both on the front and back.

We mentioned in our first impressions of Redmi 7 that the smartphone has all the ingredients required to make a good Android smartphone. During our review, we found that the smartphone fares well in two major aspects - battery and camera capabilities. The handset looks good with its new glossy plastic body with ‘Aura Smoke’ design.

Xiaomi Redmi 7 Review
Source: Yugatech English Archive.org version
Overall, the Redmi 7 is an entry-level device that’s more than sufficient. There’s a couple of drawbacks: HD+ display, thick bezels around the screen, slightly washed out selfies, frame drops on moderate to high settings in gameplay, and the like. Still, there are its pros too: price point, battery life, vibrant color reproduction, natural-looking selfies even with the Beauty mode, surprisingly good audio, and such. The Redmi 7’s no-frills look and decent performance is a bang for your buck.

Source: India Today English Archive.org version
Yes. The Redmi 7 is a good phone for its price. The Redmi 7 looks stunning for its price. The gradient finish is a highlight of the phone. And in other aspects, the Redmi 7 is a mixed bag. The phone manages to click pretty good pictures in good light, offers great battery life - possibly one the best under Rs 10,000 -- has decent performance, and comes in several funky colours. I wish the display could have brighter. But regardless, the value that Redmi 7 offers for the price is great. Go for it if you don't want to splurge more than Rs 8,000 on your smartphone.

Xiaomi has done a lot to improve the Redmi series, and the new Redmi 7 offers better features and specifications as well as more up-to-date looks than the Redmi 6. There are a few steps backwards though – we don't like the reduction in RAM on the base model and lack of a 64GB storage variant. The Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Y3 both start at Rs. 9,999 — Rs. 1,000 more than the top-end Redmi 7 — and it would be very tempting to choose either of those models for the improvements they offer.

Back in 2018, I reviewed the Redmi 5 the entry-level device which packed in a Snapdragon 450, which was a decent chipset paired with 3 GB RAM. Taller 18:9 display ratios were the trend and Xiaomi was a bit late to jump on to the train even though it was one of the few manufacturers to offer such a display in the entry-level smartphone segment. Design was not really a priority and the handset featured a slim, yet basic (non-flashy design) with a metal back.

To conclude, the Redmi 7 is a refined smartphone as compared to its predecessor. The phone features a new design language, which looks premium and is more appealing in nature. The display looks good and the cameras are quite decent in our opinion. However, when it comes to the performance, looking at the sheer specifications, it will face stiff competition with the likes of Asus Zenfone Max M2, Infinix Smart 3 Plus and more.

Redmi 7 review: A suitable upgrade over the Redmi 6
Source: Android Authority English Archive.org version
The Redmi 7 is a return to form for one of Xiaomi’s most popular product lines. The phone delivers good performance and a well-optimized usage experience, and it looks smashing while at it. The annoying presence of ads in the interface is one of the few issues I faced with the phone. And while I would be a bit cautious because of the panel gaps and course edges, I suspect this is more a product of early production-related issues, rather than an effort to reduce costs at the expense of quality.

Comment

Model: The Xiaomi Redmi series in some ways has been the benchmark for the budget friendly. It came out with specs that phones twice its price could offer. The Redmi 7 is no different. For a start, it comes in a sleek design, something that doesn’t look cheap at all. It has a 6.26 inch Corning Gorilla Glass 5 covered screen with a resolution of 720 x 1520 pixels. With a pixel density of 226 PPI, it isn’t exactly the sharpest display for media but it gets the job done for some decent Youtube playbacks and reading. The bezels are slightly on the larger side, with 81.5 screen-to-body ratio. However, the inclusion of a teardrop notch makes it look smaller than it actually is. The Redmi 7 comes with Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 632 Octa Core processor paired with an Adreno 506 GPU. Coupled with the lower resolution screen, it gives some smooth gaming experience and more importantly, long battery life. There are a few variations available in terms of RAM and storage space. RAM choices are 4, 3, and 2 GB while storage space options are 64, 32, or 16 GB. The lowest spec is mainly for people who need a smartphone mainly for messaging and calling. It’ll make a perfect smartphone for older users.

For a cheaper phone, it is surprising to know that the Redmi 7 comes with a dual camera setup. The first is a 12 MP, f/2.2 camera and the other is a 2 MP depth sensor for better portraits. User opinions are rather mixed about the photo quality with mostly saying that the photos are good enough for social media uploads. On the front is a 8 MP selfie camera. Both rear and front cameras support HDR mode. For easier access, the fingerprint reader is mounted at the back of the phone but given its size, it is slightly harder to reach for people with smaller hands. The Redmi 7 comes with a rather large 4,000 mAh battery which is charged via the older microUSB port. Xiaomi brings the latest Android 9.0 to the Redmi 7 in its own MIUI 9. The Redmi 7 might not sound like a great phone but with a comparatively high spec to price ratio, it is easily one of the cheapest phones in the market. Its main competitors come from other smaller brands such as Honor and Asus but even they are unable to match the Redmi’s quality, specs, and price.

Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 is a smartphone that not only packs better hardware, it even gets a more premium build and a much longer warranty. It was launched alongside the Redmi Note 7 Pro. Redmi is positioned as a sub-brand under Xiaomi, which is similar to the Pocophone brand. The Redmi 7 is reminiscent of its elder Note series sibling. So, users have the same camera arrangement at the back as well as fingerprint placement. The front and the back are fitted with Corning's Gorilla Glass 5 with an additional 0.8-mm-thick layer for extra durability. It has three color options, namely the Black, Blue, and Red. The Redmi Note 7 gets a 6.3-inch Full HD+ display that comes with a tiny notch at the top. It features fairly thin side bezels but compensates with a thick-looking chin and upper bezel. The front is also protected by Gorilla Glass 5. For a more premium feel, it uses 2.5D glass for both sides and the rear gets a reflective material. The sides of the phone are made of glossy plastic and thus feel less slippery than metal and glass.

Under the hood, it runs on a Snapdragon 660 processor that’s clocked at a higher 2.2 GHz with up 6 GB of RAM. As a result, it claims to outperform other Kirin 710 and Snapdragon 660 powered smartphones. The Redmi Note 7 still comes with either 32 GB or 64 GB storage options. The storage capacity can be expanded further via a microSD card on its hybrid dual-SIM tray. As for the camera, the Redmi Note 7 packs a 48 MP f/1.8 main camera that uses Samsung’s GM1 ISOCELL sensor and a secondary 5 MP shooter for depth of field effects. It has the standard camera settings, namely beautification, HDR, AI, video mode, picture quality, etc. For selfies, it gets a 13 MP main camera, which comes with AI-assisted beautification features. Powering the Redmi Note 7 is the same 4,000 mAh capacity battery and it now charges via USB-C. The device supports Quick Charge 4 fast charging. Another good news is that the 3.5 mm headphone jack and infrared blaster are also retained. Another advantage that is not commonly featured is the 18-month warranty instead of the usual 12 months. There’s also a 7-day no questions asked return policy and a 15-day one to one swap policy for factory defects. As a conclusion, the Redmi Note 7 is a step up from the current Redmi Note 6 Pro. It has better specs, a more premium looking build, a higher resolution camera and longer warranty while maintaining the same affordable price tag. The Redmi Note 7 could be the new first choice among smartphones in the same range.
