Available in its current form since early August 2007, MidnightBSD started as a FreeBSD fork in 2005. Version 3.2.0 brings the Ravenports integrated system, which allows you to build packages of complex software, including private repositories for targeted use. The default desktop environment remains Xfce.

One of the several lightweight yet flexible Unix-like operating systems currently available is MidnightBSD, which started as a FreeBSD fork in 2005, and has now reached version 3.2.0. Focusing on desktop platforms, MidnightBSD uses Xfce as the default desktop environment. The latest update introduces the Ravenports integrated package management system, as well as support for the AMD Zen 4 CPU temperature sensor and more.

The most important change is the introduction of the Ravenports package manager, which is only available for the amd64 architecture. Thankfully, those using the i386 platform can choose the Ravenports option and end up with the same result. Probably the next update will have Ravenports integrated into both releases. The mport package manager has been updated to version 2.6.2 in MidnightBSD 3.2.0.

The list of small tweaks and fixes also includes the removal of telnetd and the introduction of endian.h for compatibility. Various manual pages have been cleaned up, the portsnap configuration and vnc clients with bhyve bugs have been fixed, and the same happened to the OpenSSSH security vulnerability CVE-2006-5051. Last but not the least, multiple third-party pieces of code were updated, including sendmail, expat, ldns, nvi, openssl, and more.
