SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP6 now available with major kernel update and enhanced hardware support
The initial release of SUSE Linux Enterprise arrived at the end of August 2000 and is now available in two editions, namely Server (SLES) and Desktop (SLED). Yesterday, a new minor version (service pack) was released, bringing a new kernel and multiple changes in terms of hardware support alongside the usual set of under-the-hood tweaks and fixes.
SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP6 comes with version 6.5 of the Linux kernel, advanced memory management and file system improvements, enhancements to everything that has to do with the operating system's networking performance, as well as support for Intel Eagle Stream and Birch Stream. Alongside the kernel, there are many updated components, such as Glibc 2.38, MariaDB 10.11, PostgreSQL 17, PHP 8.2, Python 3.6 + 3.11 (both versions are supported), and more. The list of new security features and updates includes post-quantum cryptography via OpenSSL 3.1 and a 4096-bit signing key, as well as Intel TDX support in Azure.
Since this is a commercial product with multiple versions available, there are plenty of downloads to choose from. The details can be found on this page. Also, those interested in having some detailed documentation at hand can currently grab Shiv Kumar Goyal's Complete Administration Guide SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Version 15 for free with Kindle Unlimited. The book is also available in paperback format, currently for $51.
