Tails 6.4 debuts with improved cryptographic capabilities
For those who like comprehensive names, Tails stands for The Amnesic Incognito Live System, a name that should say a lot about it. Celebrating its 14th anniversary next week, this is a Debian-based live Linux distribution that focuses on providing a secure experience to those careful about preserving their anonymity and privacy when going online. Endorsed by Edward Snowden, Tails has also been financially supported by the Tor Project since the beginning.
Last month, Tails 6.3 arrived with Tor Browser 13.0.15 and a few other changes. Yesterday, Tails 6.4 dropped with a random seed that is stored on the USB stick, which improves all cryptography tasks. The list of areas that get more secure thanks to this change includes Persistent Storage, Tor, and HTTPS. In addition to Tor Browser 13.0.16, Tails 6.4 now comes with version 0.4.8.12 of the Tor client, as well as Thunderbird 115.12.0.
In addition to the above, the update fixes some issues that occurred when unlocking Persistent Storage and when connecting to mobile networks on some devices. The full changelog is available on this page. Those interested in this live Linux distro will certainly find Michael Bazzell's Extreme Privacy: What It Takes to Disappear a quite useful read.
