Microsoft and 8BitDo announce new accessibility joystick and controller for Xbox
Microsoft has announced a new Xbox accessory for players with limited mobility. Called the Xbox Adaptive Joystick, the new device has a design reminiscent of a VR headset controller sans the ring. The Xbox Adaptive Joystick is designed to work as a companion for the Xbox Adaptive Controller as well as other Xbox controllers.
The Adaptive Joystick has four buttons labelled X1, X2, X3, and X4; a standard Xbox thumbstick, a trigger button, and a bumper button. All of these buttons are customizable. Out of the box, the joystick comes with a regular thumbstick cap, but Microsoft is offering 3D printable files for adaptive thumbstick toppers via the Xbox Design Lab. The joystick also works with a quarter-inch threaded mount.
The Xbox Adaptive Joystick can be connected to the Xbox Adaptive Controller Xbox or used as a full controller by plugging directly into an Xbox console or a PC while using another controller for menu navigation. There's also the option to link it with an Xbox controller using Xbox Controller Assist for solo play or with another player.
The Xbox Adaptive Joystick comes in white and will be available early 2025 for $29.99 in select markets around the globe and be available exclusively via the Microsoft store. It will also ship in a new accessible packaging that is easy to unbox.
In addition to the Xbox Adaptive Controller, Xbox has also announced a new 8BitDo controller for gamers with limited mobility. The 8BitDo Lite SE 2.4G Wireless Controller for Xbox is a refined version of the 8BitDo Lite SE. The Xbox variant is bigger with larger buttons and comes in white. It is also compatible with the Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11 computers.
The Lite SE 2.4G has all of its buttons on the face including dedicated ones for LS and RS. It also has a silicone mat on the bottom to prevent slipping when playing and an audio jack. Owners will be able to update the controller's firmware and customize the buttons using the 8BitDo Ultimate Software X.
The 8BitDo Lite SE 2.4G Wireless Controller for Xbox is available to order now for $59.99 from Amazon or directly from 8BitDo. It comes with two 8BitDo Super Buttons which are programmable and can be assigned to any function without using the software. The Super Buttons are also compatible with the Xbox Adaptive Controller.
