Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio Review: Microsoft rethinks Windows workstations with Surface-level power

The conversation surrounding the SLS has typically devolved into how it under performs due to its integration of the RTX 3050 Ti GPU, and in head-to-head comparisons, it does get roundly trounced, but few reviews detail the types of workloads, lifestyle use cases the SLS excels at or acknowledge the shortcomings of using a beefier GPU on competitive alternatives. As I said up top, the SLS is a keenly crafted set of intentional compromises that work in the favor of someone in the Microsoft ecosystem, specifically used to using Surface devices. The SLS also has the added bonus of being a viable tool for first time graphic designers, long time graphics designers who are looking to consolidate hardware or anyone who can make use of a digital pen or stylus. The SLS can also serve as a mini theater for kids when on the road and hotel TV just isn't cutting it. Beyond all of that, the SLS offers enough power to be good enough to forget the specs and speed comparisons in everyday use.

It’s easy to dismiss the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio as nothing more than a gimmick in a pretty chassis, but the device is much more than just specifications. This is Microsoft’s new flagship laptop that is aimed at a very niche sector of an already saturated market. The Surface Laptop Studio isn’t made for the everyday person, but more so for someone that has a focus on creativity-based tasks. If you’re a digital artist and you want the best of a laptop and a drawing canvas, this is a laptop designed for you. For most other people, however, the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio’s design isn’t going to be enough to justify purchasing this laptop over the countless others that offer better performance, battery life, and portability. For $2,100, Microsoft only refined a design that already existed before, and while it truly made a beautiful laptop, you’re better off sticking to something more traditional.

Surface Laptop Studio Review: Two weeks in, and it's the best Surface I've ever owned

If you're hoping to buy the Surface Laptop Studio, then do it. From the display to the overall performance of the dGPU, it's one excellent machine. Sure, you can find a laptop that's better-performing for the same price, but not many laptops with a dGPU offer up the different modes of use and inking support that the Laptop Studio has. For fans of Microsoft, the Laptop Studio is excellent. It takes everything learned from Surface Pro, Surface Laptop, and Surface Book, and puts it all together in one fantastic product.

And of course, those looking to get the most bang for their buck can grab cheaper options from other PC manufacturers. Sure, you’ll lose out on the premium build quality of a Microsoft device, but if you’re looking to get as much performance as possible for the lowest price, build quality is something I’d happily trade. All that said, the Surface Laptop Studio is an excellent, premium Windows PC. Unless that’s what you need (or want), there are probably better ways to spend your money.

A new design from Microsoft in the Surface line for 2021! The Surface Laptop Studio effectively replaces the Surface Book line as MS’ convertible laptop line for creatives. It has a 14.4” IPS 120Hz pull-forward display design that’s uncommon but not unique. The design makes it easy to switch from laptop to tablet and tent modes. It runs Windows 11 Home on 35 watt Intel quad core i5 and i7 CPUs, putting it in between an Ultrabook and mobile workstation or gaming laptop in terms of performance. The Core i7 has NVIDIA RTX 3050 Ti dedicated graphics. The laptop is available with 16/32GB RAM, up to a 2TB SSD and has Thunderbolt 4. It’s compatible with the new Surface Slim Pen 2 (sold separately) and the pen magnetically attaches to the laptop and charges. The pen has haptics for a more pen on paper feel, and it has a haptic Precision trackpad.

Its list of compromises is much shorter — really, it’s the high sticker price and poor battery life and not much else — and it’s an enjoyable computer to use, even if you never draw a single digital brushstroke. Still, even if you’re Microsoft’s ideal customer, you need to give up a lot of money and battery life to get this screen with all its flexibility. But if you’re willing to be flexible yourself, and don’t really need a screen that moves in unique ways, the Dell XPS 15 is a lovely computer that costs a bit less while providing a bit more power.

I wouldn't benefit from the clever hinge as much as an artist, designer, engineer, or anyone who prefers using a stylus or touch inputs over a touchpad. And again, you’ll also have to decide whether this arguably niche device is worth the investment, versus general-purpose notebooks that may offer more value. The latest to join the Microsoft Surface Laptop series is none other than the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio i7 RTX 3050 Ti. Just as the name suggests, this laptop has been incorporated with an Intel Core i7-11370H processor along with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). As far as its case is concerned, this device is basically a regular laptop with an additional hinge in the middle of the screen. This simply means the screen can be tilted forward in two positions, one position in front of the keyboard or it can be simply put down onto the keyboard and use the Surface Laptop Studio as a tablet. It is worth mentioning that the hinge mechanism itself leaves a solid impression and does not appear wobbly or fragile.
In terms of its connectivity, Microsoft still uses its own Surface Connect port and offers some corresponding accessories like docking stations. There are two USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 4 support which can be used for third-party docking stations as well. It is worth mentioning that there are no other ports like regular USB-A or an SD-card reader in this laptop. This device also comes in with a 1080p webcam. As far as its keyboard is concerned, this model definitely shows a difference compared to previous models, because the keys are coloured in a darker grey tone and not the colour of the base unit anymore. Apart from that, the good mechanism did not change and the typing experience is very comfortable. In addition, it is no problem to type longer texts as there are sufficient key travel and precise keystrokes. The three-stage white illumination also tends to help while working in darker environments.
As for its touchpad and touchscreen, Microsoft has followed Apple’s example and equips the Surface Laptop Studio with a force touchpad which cannot be depressed physically. The display of the Surface Laptop Studio uses a 14.4-inch IPS panel with the resolution of 2400 x 1600 pixels and an aspect ratio of 3:2. It is worth noting that the bezels are rounded like the rest of the case. Therefore, the contents in the display corners will be slightly cut off. While it does not really hide any contents, it is quite noticeable in practice though. As mentioned earlier, this laptop’s Intel’s Core i7-11370H is a Tiger Lake-H35 processor with four cores (eight threads) running at up to 4.8 GHz or 4.3 GHz on all active cores, respectively. The CPU can generally consume slightly more than 50W for a short time here and quickly levels off at 40W. However, the Intel quad-core does not stand a chance against the competition from AMD and their current CPUs are almost twice as fast and Intel’s new Alder Lake chips also have a big advantage thanks to the increased number of cores. Overall, it is a great laptop to explore, depending on the need and preference of the user.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
