Meta Quest 3S teardown reveals internal interchangeability with Quest 2
The Meta Quest 3S looks much more like a "Quest 2 Pro" from the inside, according to iFixit presenter Shahram Mokhtari on taking the new VR headset apart.
The popular device repair group reported that the 3S has the exact same Frenel lenses as its predecessor - not to mention the same interpupillary distance (IPD) sliders and even the same LCD display panel.
Those findings might hint at a lazy, if resourceful, cash-grab by Meta - then again, they also mean that a Quest 3S can be repaired by salvaging some parts from a 2 otherwise lying about the place unused.
The 3S has also dropped a number of the Quest 2's least welcome features, the proximity sensor at increased risk of shorting out and melting the plastic around it due to exposure to face-sweat included.
In addition, the presence of updated tracking, IR and color pass-through sensors behind the 3S' new face-plate was confirmed, as was the headset's upgrade to the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform.
Accordingly, this newer model might be the one more worthy of investing at least $299 into right now after all.
