Retro publisher Mega Cat Studios is ringing in 2026 with a “triple launch” of new NES and SNES cartridges, reviving classic hardware with Super Fanger, Plyuk, and Old Towers. Blending couch co-op tag, cloning-based puzzle-platforming, and frantic action-puzzling, the lineup underscores how the homebrew scene is pushing old consoles into surprisingly fresh territory.
Retro video game publisher Mega Cat Studios has kicked off 2026 with a “triple launch” of new games for the NES and SNES. The company will release physical cartridges for Super Fanger for the SNES, Plyuk for the NES, and Old Towers for the NES on January 29 via its online store.
The homebrew community is shaking things up by developing new games and releases for old retro home consoles. Mega Cat Studios has a solid track record of creating and publishing games for the NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis.
Super Fanger, Plyuk, and Old Towers will be available for digital download, with physical cartridges planned for later releases, allowing retro enthusiasts to dust off their original consoles once again. Or play these games on an emulator to experience these new 8-bit and 16-bit titles.
Super Fanger for the SNES takes a retro-spooky twist on the classic game of tag. It’s designed for two players who explore four different maps, each bearing some hidden unlockables. The core gameplay loop revolves around chasing down or running away from “whoever’s it.”
This pixelated game of Tag features a solo Arcade Mode and a competitive Versus mode, for solo runs or couch play with friends.
Moving toward the NES, Plyuk is a cerebral puzzle-platforming title. The story follows Plyuk, who finds themselves trapped in an underground laboratory filled with hazards. Gamers must master the art of cloning, creating duplicate stacks or blocks to reach high ledges, or solve challenging puzzles.
Plyuk was initially released on Itch.io last year, but this NES edition refines the game for Nintendo’s classic 8-bit home console.
Last but not least, the trio includes Old Towers. It’s an action-puzzle NES game where players are supposed to bolt through a cursed tower and make it past 40 different brain-twisting levels. Players will switch between different characters to solve “brain-boggling” puzzles, and hoard coins, while dashing vertically and horizontally through stages.
Old Towers was initially released as a ZX Spectrum title in 2018 by developer Retrosouls. This homebrew game received numerous ports to various platforms. It also received a digital release on the NES/Famicom via itch.io last year. Now, in 2026, Mega Cat is preparing Old Towers for an NES cartridge release.
