McLaren Racing teams up with TDK in Formula E
Earlier today, Reuters reported that TDK teamed up with McLaren Racing in Formula E racing. Currently supplying batteries to most smartphone makers, including Apple, TDK was once one of the top brands in the now dead and gone cassette tape market. As the world's largest smartphone battery supplier, it's not a surprise to see it aiming at Formula E, where it could refine next-gen technologies before offering them to consumers. The iconic aforementioned team chosen for this purpose was founded in 1963 and joined Formula E in the 2022-2023 season, when its first race was the 2023 Mexico City ePrix.
According to Taro Iukushima, TDK Electronic Components Business Company CEO,
"Formula E technology is always at the cutting edge of EVs, and we want them to utilize our components so we can sharpen our technology."
The list of components to be used in its Formula E efforts by TDK includes ceramic capacitors, temperature sensors, and more. Founded in 1935, TDK now attributes roughly 25% of its total sales to the automotive market. This year, TDK shares went up 39%, while Japan's broader Topix index only climbed 13%.
After 32 races in Formula E, the McLaren Racing team amassed four pole positions, three podiums, one win, and a total of 189 points. At the 2023 London ePrix, it was the first team in the history of motorsports to use a livery designed using AI.
Although not many people are still using cassette tapes these days, enthusiasts can still grab old-school TDK products off various websites. On Amazon, those interested can acquire a pack of 6 TDK Superior Normal Bias D90 blanks for $25.78.
