Scout Terra takes on Tesla Cybertruck with 500-mile range on gas generator and lower price

Tesla better be pricing wisely its most affordable RWD Cybertruck trim next year, as it will ultimately have to go against the Scout Terra competition that will offer 500 miles of range 'with a bit of gas.'

While Tesla may not hit the promised 500-mile Cybertruck electric pickup range even with the $16,000 extender accessory, legacy automakers don't have the same restraints when it comes to hitting that range mark.

VW just resurrected its Scout brand of rugged vehicles in the US as an electric car company, but with a twist. Its first Terra electric pickup and Traveler SUV can cover 500 miles of range "with a bit of gas," as they will have extended range versions featuring both a large battery pack and an onboard generator.

The solution could be more economical than simply putting a giant battery in the upcoming Terra, as it will start from just $51,500 with the federal tax credit and other incentives. For comparison, the Cybertruck now starts at $79,990, while the cheapest RWD trim that is coming in 2025 may cost less, but then again it will only offer 250 miles of range.

The cited $51,500 price after incentive is probably for the pure electric Terra pickup version with 350 miles of range on a charge, which will still outrun a RWD Cybertruck. All Terra trims, however, will come with body-on-frame chassis, a solid rear axle, front and rear mechanical locking differentials, AWD, and a 240V power outlet in the 5.5-foot truck bed.

Needless to say, a lot may happen between 2025 and 2027, when Scout's Terra electric pickup will be released, but if VW manages to hit this sweet price spot on a truck that can cover 500 miles, it might be a hit precisely on account of the gas generator that pure EV plays can't install.

The Traveler SUV, which Scout also calls the Harvester, will be available in an electric-only version that offers 350 miles of range, too, priced lower than the Terra pickup at about $50,000 after incentives.

The six-seater will come with a rugged body-on-frame chassis that will make it a true off-roader, and when electric juice runs out, one can always turn to the fossil fuel canister. That's arguably a better solution for off-roaders who are often out in the boondocks with little to no charging infrastructure around.

Scout has now opened the early reservations list for the 500-mile Traveler SUV and Terra pickup truck, and those eager to get on the production line first can plunk a $100 refundable deposit.
