Autonomous Tesla Robotaxi to be comfortable 2-seater with McLaren doors
Tesla's NV93 (for "next vehicle") prototype is apparently exactly what it plans to announce today at the autonomous Robotaxi event, scheduled to begin at 7PM Pacific at Warner's Hollywood studio.
According to Tesla insiders, the Robotaxi's inaugural event will showcase a two-seater with butterfly doors of the type we are more accustomed to see on sports cars from Ferrari, McLaren, or Lamborghini.
The early design sketch of the Robotaxi prototype that appears in Walter Isaacson's Elon Musk biography depicts butterfly doors, indeed. As for the tip that the Robotaxi won't have a back bench, the wooden prototype that Tesla teased in one of its investor relations videos, was outfitted with big, comfortable white seats, too.
Besides a side view of the prototype, said video depicts a sign on the wall of the design studio that says "NV93 vehicle package." Previous insider information claimed that the next generation vehicle project of Tesla, on which both the driverless Robotaxi and the mass market Model 2 will be built, has internal codenames denoted as NV9X or Project Redwood. Tesla reportedly took apart a Honda Civic to get some ideas on how to build a compelling and affordable small car.
Thus, the silhouette depicted there could very well be close to the final Robotaxi design. There is no steering wheel, for example, but a large and cushy ergonomic seat is clearly visible.
Whether the Robotaxi will come with white leather seats as depicted on the prototype designs, remains to be seen, but in the beginning of the video Tesla shows seemingly unconnected footage of wood drilling and carving, so natural accents are not out of the question for the Robotaxi interior, too.
