Marvel’s Wolverine doesn't appear to be living up to the expectations of critics.
Marvel’s Wolverine currently has a Metacritic score of 78, making it Insomniac Games’ lowest-rated original release since 2016. Critics cite repetitive action, restrictive linear environments and an underwhelming story ahead of the PS5 exclusive’s September 15 launch.

Marvel's Wolverine has landed as Insomniac Games' lowest-scoring release in years. Sitting around 77–78 on Metacritic from over 100 critic reviews, the superhero title trails every one of the studio's Spider-Man games, including 2018's original (87), Miles Morales (85), and 2023's sequel (90). This marks Insomniac's lowest-rated original game since 2016’s Song of the Deep, while several outlets even frame it as the lowest-rated first-party PlayStation exclusive of the entire PS5 generation, trailing Astro Bot, God of War Ragnarök, and even Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

To be fair, a Metacritic score of 78 is still a generally favorable result, with critics highlighting several strengths. These include Wolverine’s brutal, fast-paced combat, spectacular action sequences, visual presentation and Insomniac’s portrayal of Logan. However, recurring criticisms take aim at repetitive combat, limited exploration, a restrictive linear, corridor-based gameplay that feels dated compared to Insomniac's open-world Spider-Man games, alongside an underwhelming story. The overall result is a game that is above average rather than exceptional.

Marvel's Wolverine is scheduled to launch on September 15, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5, priced at $69.99 for the standard edition.
