According to a report by Japanese outlet Mac Otakara, Chinese suppliers are already working on two new Apple products, slated to arrive in April: the AirPods Pro 2nd gen, and the 3rd gen iPhone SE. While the report offers us a timeframe for the arrival of these products, there were very little specifics about the upgrades these products will bring to the table.
According to Otakara, the 2nd generation AirPods Pro will feature a redesigned charging case, which will approximately 5mm thinner than the current case. No additional insights were provided with regards to the 3rd generation iPhone SE. However, a look at the generational updates Apple’s implemented for its iPhone SE lineup offers clues as to what we can expect.
The iPhone SE 2 increased screen size to 4.7 inches while incorporating the Apple A13 SoC. We expect the iPhone SE 3 to feature an A14 chip, delivering performance parity to the iPhone 12 lineup. What’s less certain, however, is whether or not Apple will update the display specification. The iPhone 12 Mini - the cheapest model in the iPhone 12 lineup - already features a 5.4-inch display. If the iPhone SE 3 gets a display upgrade, it would potentially make the Mini redundant.
It’ll also be interesting to see how Apple plans on upgrading the AirPods Pro. While the AirPods Pro are a step up from the vanilla AirPods, audiophiles apparently remain unconvinced about their sound quality. The 1st-gen AirPods already offer class-leading quality-of-life functions, so audio quality is the most obvious facet for Apple to improve.
