The hardware is one thing, but the software is just as important for an enjoyable user experience with a gaming handheld. MSI improved the software of the new Claw 8 EX AI+ significantly and the new quick settings menu in particular is very convincing.

MSI uses Intel processors since the first generation of its Claw gaming handheld and while the first model with Meteor Lake chips had a significant efficiency deficit compared to the AMD competition, the second generation powered by Lunar Lake processors managed to close the gap completely. The brand-new Claw 8 EX AI+ now features Intel's first dedicated handheld processor and the performance in combination with the Arc B390 iGPU is impressive and easily beats AMD's current Ryzen Z2 Extreme SoC.

However, the performance is only one aspect for a successful gaming handheld, and the software is just as important. While we liked MSI's Center M software from the beginning, there was definitely room for improvements, especially in terms of power profiles. The new Claw supports the Xbox full-screen experience, which was introduced with the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X last year. It means you do not have to deal all that much with Windows once you have installed your games. Here you can decide whether you want MSI's Center M or the Xbox app as your starting page.

The biggest improvement is the quick settings menu, which is integrated into the Xbox Game Bar and offers all important settings at the touch of one button. This also includes the manual power profile, which now allows the adjustment of the PL1/PL2 values right in the quick settings menu. You can also change the frequency of the screen or active real-time monitoring, which is much more comprehensive than before. You can choose between six different styles (box or in a line) with different parameters, which can be placed in either corner or at the center of the top and bottom edge, respectively. This is particularly helpful if you want to optimize your gaming experience.

Intel and MSI are also working on the addition of the two features Endurance Gaming (fixed fps limits for lower power consumption) as well as multi frame generation directly into the quick settings menu. Right now, both features have to be activated via Intel's graphics driver software. All in all, MSI improved the software even further and combined with the powerful Arc G3 Extreme processor, you get the fastest gaming handheld on the market. However, the price is extremely high at $1799. Please see our full review for more information about the new MSI Claw 8 EX AI+.
