MSI is launching a new storage solution for the highest demands. The Spatium M580 Frozr is an extremely fast SSD that connects via four PCIe 5 lanes. The SSD is to be launched in one-, two-, and four-terabyte versions and comes with 2-8 GB LPDDR4 memory. According to the manufacturer, the 2-terabyte version is the fastest model, which is said to achieve read speeds of up to 14,600 MByte/s and write speeds of 12,700 MByte/s. These figures apply to sequential data transfer. The SSDs are said to consume a maximum of 11.5 watts, but in idle mode (PS3) the power consumption is stated at just 0.144 watts.
The lifespan is specified as 700, 1,400, and 3,000 terabytes written, with an MTBF of up to 1,600,000 operating hours. The Spatium M580 Frozr is also a real eye-catcher: a large cooling solution is used. MSI does not install an active fan but relies exclusively on passive heat transfer. Three heat pipes are available for this, which make direct contact with the memory chips and the controller. The aluminum cooling fins ensure heat is transferred to the air over a large area.
According to the manufacturer, this should result in a temperature reduction of up to 20 °C. The cooling solution should benefit greatly from good airflow within the housing. With the heatsink, the Spatium M580 Frozr is 71.65 millimeters high, but should not protrude much beyond an M.2 2280 slot, so that the SSD does not get in the way of graphics cards, for example.
There are currently no prices available for the Spatium M580 Frozr. Another MSI SSD with the heatsink - Spatium M480 - is available on Amazon.
