Model: The MSI GT73VR 7RE Titan - 7RE-298 is a notebook for gaming that makes no compromises in terms of performance. The hardware is based on the latest components and virtual reality is fully supported. With dimensions of 428 x 314 x 44.6 mm and a weight of 4.14 kg (including battery), this is a model of a certain weight and will not be too comfortable to carry on the back. Compared to past generations, the laptop has improved in both details and finishes. The lines and colors are inspired by Sci-Fi weapons to convey the feeling of extreme speed. The base of the notebook offers four rubber feet for good stability on the table. Unfortunately, it does not allow the extraction of the battery without opening the laptop, a process that theoretically invalidates the warranty upon breaking the seal. The heart of of GT73VR 7RE button is represented by an Intel Core i7-7820HK processor with a base clock of 2.90 GHz (4 cores / 8 threads) of the 7th generation, which can reach up to 3.90 GHz in Turbo mode. It has two 8 GB DDR4 (2400 MHz) RAM modules installed. However, it also accommodates up to a maximum of 64 GB of RAM (DDR4-2400, 32 GB/s read and 36 GB/s write) installable in the four available slots. As for storage, it has two drives, a 256 GB SSD and a 1 TB HDD at 7200 RPM. MSI has chosen to adopt the Nvidia GeForce 1070 GTX with 8 GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory SLI configuration. The card provides display output format of 4K and games in virtual reality.
For the display, the notebook has a 17.3-inch screen with Full-HD resolution (1920x1080 pixels) offering a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a response time of only 5 ms. Hence it can perfectly take advantage of the performance of the dedicated graphics card. In addition, there is an HD web cam (30 fps / 720p) and a stereo microphone on top of the display. As for input devices, it has a gum-type keyboard manufactured by SteelSeries and offers software configurable RGB LED lighting. As usual, some of the F1-F12 keys get double functionality by pressing the FN key. In addition to the complete keyboard, there is a large touchpad. As for audio, the notebook has a Dynaudio 2.1 speaker system consisting of two 2W satellites and a 5W subwoofer, all being enhanced with Nahimic 2 technology, as well as the excellent DSA ESS Saber Hi-Fi. As a novelty in comparison to the original model, the certification for Hi-Res Audio is exclusively offered. This means that sound can be reproduced with a sample rate of 24 bits / 192 Hz. MSI will be the only brand that offers this possibility, at least for now.
Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamNVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 (Laptop): Pascal based high-end mobile graphics card based on a cut down GP104 (like the GTX 1080) and GDDR5 graphics memory. Successor to the GTX 980M with a 10 Watts higher TDP. Similar to the desktop GTX 1070 performance wise, but with more shaders and lower clock speeds.
These graphics cards are able to play the latest and most demanding games in high resolutions and full detail settings with enabled Anti-Aliasing.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
7820HK: Quad-core notebook processor based on the Kaby Lake architecture running at 2.9 - 3.9 GHz. It is the second fastest model of the consumer H-series in the beginning of 2017. The chip also integrates the HD Graphics 630 GPU clocked at 350 - 1100 MHz and is manufactured in a 14 nm process (improved compared to Skylake). Compared to the Core i7-7820HQ, the 7820HK lacks business features like vPro or TXT support.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
This large display size is used for laptops which are mainly intended for an use on a desk.
Large display-sizes allow higher resolutions. So, details like letters are bigger. On the other hand, the power consumption is lower with small screen diagonals and the devices are smaller, more lightweight and cheaper.» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
This weight is representative for typical laptops with a 14-16 inch display-diagonal.
