Gold piece for gamers? The MSI GS60 is now available with a 4K display and Maxwell GPU, the current update uses the fast GeForce GTX 970M. Our review will show if everything is gold that glitters at the GS60.

On paper, MSI's GS60 Ghost Pro 4K gaming laptop appears to be too good to be true. A quad-core Core i7 processor, GTX 970M graphics, solid-state storage and a 15.6in, 4K display packed into a body that's less than 20mm thick? Every gamer's dream, and MSI has improved on the original GS60 formula in more ways than one.

Unless you need all day battery life, go buy one now. Really. If you can afford it, there's even a cost saving rationale: you won't need a highly portable laptop for work and a separate gaming machine. It's all things to all people: a work machine, travel companion and amazingly powerful gaming laptop.

The MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 3K 2QE really is a gaming tour de force. Even at the native 2,880 x 1,620 resolution of the 3K panel, the GTX970m is able to generate smooth frame rates. The only caveat will be games such as Tomb Raider will need the image quality settings dialed down a little, to a notch just below maximum. On a 15.6 inch screen it is difficult to get the full value from a 3k panel. Without calling upon Windows 8.1 scaling options, desktop text is miniscule, and tricky to read. That said, a couple of scaling tweaks in the operating system can cure many legibility issues. I say many, because not all 3k/4k 15″ usability issues can be resolved via the OS.

Model: Built to awe gaming intensive users, the MSI GS602QE Ghost Pro 4K Gold Edition will definite turn heads with its internal specs and external bling. Claimed to be the thinnest and lightest 15.6 inch gaming laptop out there by MSI, the elegant device is a wonderful portable gaming option. The first thing noticeable is the rose gold color used on the entire chassis and front panel with a brush metal finish. This is an unusual color but will bode well with users looking for something flashy and different.
The design contains clean lines and the famous multi-color SteelSeries keyboard with good layout and feedback response. The Windows 8.1 laptop comes with a 15.6 inch 4K UHD PLS display that produces superb image quality expected with 4K resolution. At the heart of the device is an Intel Core i7-4720HQ processor clocked at 2.7 GHz, up to 16 GB DDR3L 1600 MHz RAM, and the all-powerful NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M GPU with 3 GB GDDR5 VRAM.
The audio quality is also impressive with sound by Dynaudio and Creative Sound Blaster Cinema 2 technology. Other features include a FHD webcam, Bluetooth 4.0, Killer DoubleShot Pro LAN, three USB 3.0 ports and a Mini-display port. Battery life on the MSI GS602QE Ghost Pro 4K Gold Edition is decent with a 6-cell Li-Polymer pack rated at 4840 mAh powering the beast.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M:
Second fastest high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell GM204 chip from the GeForce GTX 900M series.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
4720HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.6 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.6 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
