Reviews for the MSI GS60 6QE-063UK

70% MSI GS60 Ghost Pro (002)
Source: PC Mag English Archive.org version
The MSI GS60 Ghost Pro is an appealing laptop, providing high-end gaming performance in a svelte build. It has a wide array of port options and a surprising amount of storage space, rounded out with extra pluses like customizable backlighting. The display is nice, though, while the speakers are subpar and the short battery life takes away much of the reason to have a smaller system. The 970M graphics won't get you near 60fps (and may not guarantee 30fps in cutting-edge or future titles for long), so it's hard to ultimately recommend laying out the asking price.

40% MSI GS60 Ghost Pro

The MSI GS60’s performance per dollar is difficult to beat. A comparable Alienware costs $2,250, while the upcoming revision of the Asus G501, with similar hardware, will cost about $1,800. The MSI’s comparatively low $1,700 price point starts to look mighty attractive among its competitors.

The MSI GS60 makes a good start with its slimline design and a high-quality screen. However, disappointing battery life and issues with heat, plus performance that's only on a par with rivals, mean that other machines have the edge.

Model: The MSI GS60 6QE-063UK, also known as MSI GS60 6QE Ghost Pro, is a high-end gaming laptop packed into a manageable and slim chassis. Its overall design is rather tame compared to the more flamboyant laptops on MSI's list with an all-black chassis and a minimalist lid with just the MSI name and logo. The most flashy hardware feature on the device is the SteelSeries keyboard with is customizable full-color backlight. There are two display options to choose from; either a FHD or a UHD. Both are 15.6 inch IPS panels with wide viewing angles.

The Windows 10 system comes with a 6th generation Intel Core i7 processor, up to 32 GB of DDR4 RAM and a capable NVIDIA GeForce GTX970M GPU with 3 GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM. The storage devices can be configured with HDDs of different capacity and an M.2 SSD depending on your budget. Audio quality is impressive with the speakers powered by Sound by Dynaudio and an ESS SABRE HiFi audio DAC. Other features on the MSI GS60 6QE-063UK are Bluetooth 4.1, Killer LAN technology, an HDMI out, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, two USB 3.0 ports and a mini-Displayport. Battery life is provided by a gigantic 6-cell pack yet the overall weight is kept at 1.9 kg.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M:

Second fastest high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell GM204 chip from the GeForce GTX 900M series.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

6700HQ: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

15.60":

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) was founded in 1986 in Taiwan. MSI is especially known as a manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards for PCs, but also offers computer accessories, complete systems, motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, desktop PCs, monitors and other components. However, the Microstar brand name in Germany belongs to the Medion company. MSI is known for its gaming products and has developed a wide range of gaming laptops and desktop PCs. The company is also active in workstations, servers and industrial automation. MSI has offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

60%: Such a poor rating is rare. There are only a few notebooks that were rated even worse. The rating websites do not give a purchase recommendation here.
