Reviews for the MSI GE63 8RE-222DE
Meanwhile, the styling and build quality is okay but the addition of RGB certainly isn’t a deal maker. In fact, the use of keys with an open side that lets more of the backlighting shine out is particularly distracting. An altogether more subtle approach would get our vote – but then again, you may love RGB lighting, in which case the MSI GE63 Raider RGB 8RE will almost certainly appeal.

Model: The GE63 Raider RGB is the stylish racing inspired machine among the gaming notebooks. It scores in games and multimedia applications when highest performance is in demand. It is a very complete gaming notebook, with RGB LED backlighting on keyboard and lid, good dissipation system and power in abundance. The slim aluminum housing on the laptop stands for stylish appearance and high mobility. The design is similar to the other GE63 laptops with identical measurements (419 x 285 x 28.5 mm) and similar weight (2.8 kilos). It is a relatively thin laptop with powerful hardware and an integrated battery of 6 cells (51 Wh) with the autonomy that user would expect in such a model. Internally, there is a 15.6-inch matte screen with 1080p resolution at 120 Hz, 3 ms, and Wide View. The nimble 120 Hz / 3 ms true color screen ensures absolutely fluid performance in the game and allows an unrestrained response. The Full HD resolution is to ensure that gamers get the best frame rate required for gaming. Similar to many laptops in the market, there are also a webcam and integrated microphone on the screen. For the first time, the SteelSeries gaming keyboard offers programmable single button lighting on a notebook. One of the external points to point out of this particular model is that this laptop has customizable Mystic Light RGB LED lighting bands on the cover. Not all gaming laptops have something like that, and it is worth mentioning.
The MSI GE63 Raider RGB has an Intel Core i7 8750H processor, a Coffee Lake portable version with a base frequency of 2.2 GHz, 6 cores and 12 threads in total. It comes with nothing less than 16 GB of DDR4 RAM at 2,400 MHz, and graphically has the invaluable support of an NVIDIA GTX 1060, with its 6GB of GDDR5 video memory. The storage would be borne by an M.2 unit with a SATA 6 Gbps 128 GB interface as a system unit for a lightning-fast system and program starts, accompanied by a 1 TB hard drive for mass storage. Furthermore, the laptop features the Dynaudio sound system that supports the game and movie experience with powerful sound. Besides that, the Killer Gaming Network Card with Killer Shield optimizes data rates and reduces latency in online combat. Regarding connectivity, there are a lot of things on either side of the laptop, such as card reader, USB ports (3.1, and even a C type), audio input and output, Gigabit Ethernet, external power port, and air vents for the integrated cooling system. There are also HDMI and mini DisplayPort, to connect external screens. The MSI GE63 8RE-222DE is a serious gaming machine. Unlike many gaming laptops these days, this model doesn’t take the effort to blend itself in and make it look like it’s a professional laptop with gaming capabilities. It is a straightforward, beastly looking machine.
Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamNVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (Laptop): The mobile GTX 1060 is based on the GP106 chip and offer 1280 shaders. Compared to the identically named desktop version it features a slightly lower clock rate. Games in Full HD and maximum details should run fluently on the card. These graphics cards are able to play the latest and most demanding games in high resolutions and full detail settings with enabled Anti-Aliasing. » Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
8750H: On Coffee Lake architecture based processor for big and heavy laptops. Integrates six processor cores clocked at 2.2 - 4.1 GHz (4 GHz with 4 cores, 3.9 GHz with 6 cores) that support HyperThreading. Manufactured in an improved 14nm process (14nm++). » Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
