However, here the manufacturer has managed to maintain a good balance of good and compromise parts. At the beginning of this review, we questioned MSI’s claims that this laptop is going to be groundbreaking and impressive. To be fair, the notebook is pretty good for what it is. The 45W RTX 4050 really can’t hold a candle to the 85W one of the MSI Katana 15. However, it is pretty good at games, and at this moment in time, when laptops with RTX 4000 are still young, the Cyborg 15 (A12V) does seem like a good purchase. MSI Cyborg 15 (A12V)’s IPS panel has a Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. It doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment, but unfortunately, it covers only 54% of the sRGB color gamut. Also, its pixel response time is a bit slow, which doesn’t bode well with the fast refresh rate of 144Hz. Unfortunately, the battery life is not stellar. We got about 5 hours of Web browsing, or 4 hours and 30 minutes of video playback. After all, this is 2023 and gaming laptops are no longer sick of the limited battery life disease. On the bright side, the laptop offers two SODIMM slots for memory expansion.

The MSI Cyborg 15 has a lot going for it It has a cool design, great performance and costs less than $1,000. The display could be brighter and a bit more colorful, but the 144Hz refresh rate is welcome. And while its battery life isn’t great, the Cyborg 15 also doubles as a good productivity device, so long as you keep it plugged in. If you’re looking for a more affordable option, the $749 Acer Nitro 5 is a good choice. The $1,199 Alienware x14 is another worthy option if you don’t mind paying $200 more. But for what it offers for $999, the MSI Cyborg 15 is absolutely worth considering if you’re new to PC gaming or you’re on a tighter budget. Plus, it just looks too cool to ignore.

Battery life is never much to cheer about in a computer like this. I get barely two hours of runtime when playing demanding games, and maybe a full working day of surfing and emailing. But just maybe, with too much brightness and a little more load on the processor, the hours shrink. You charge the battery with a separate ISO connector, and then have a USB-C port for data or monitor, as well as two USB Type-A ports, all three with USB 3 Gen 1 speed. You also get fixed gigabit networking, if you don’t want to connect wirelessly. Its Wi-Fi 6 is fast and stable, but I miss the support for 6 GHz and Wi-Fi 6e that many of its competitors have. It’s not a single important thing enough to lower the rating, but the MSI Cyborg 15 accumulates a list of things that either make my time with the computer less enjoyable or limit what it’s good at. The exception is when I play games, when the power of the graphics card comes into its own. But a nicer screen would have been welcome even for that.

As with any budget laptop, corners get cut to decrease the price. For us, there's a bit too much missing here. But, if your budget doesn't stretch beyond $800 and you like the look of the Cyborg 15, then the RTX 4060-based model at Best Buy is the better buy when you can find it on sale. I've seen it as low as $750 with a massive $350 discount.
