Lucid deems its EVs superior to a Tesla as it preps 3 cheaper models to take on 'distracted' Elon Musk
Lucid, the maker of some of the most efficient electric vehicles, revealed that it will take advantage of a "distracted" Tesla to release more mass market models than originally planned.
It is about to launch its first Gravity SUV that will address a market six times larger than the one for its performance Air sedans, but there will be three other models coming down the pipeline.
"When I was at Tesla," explained Lucid's CEO, "it was the [EV] tech leader." "It has become distracted and Lucid has now taken that mantle," he claimed.
He may have a point, as the 2025 Lucid Air Pure is now one of the world's most efficient electric cars. This has long been Lucid's goal, and its energy efficiency specs are 25% higher than the Tesla Model Y rating.
With its record-low energy consumption of 5 miles/kWh, for instance, the new Air Pure sedan is able to cover more than 400 miles on a charge with an 84 kWh battery.
Since Lucid's CEO is now of the opinion that Tesla has jumped the shark on EV technology leadership, the company will be spearheading the development of mass market electric vehicles to capitalize on "distracted" Elon Musk.
Besides the big three-row Gravity SUV that will start shipping later this year, Lucid plans three cheaper models for 2026. One will be a smaller sedan to go against the Tesla Model 3, likely as Lucid's most affordable car.
The other will be a mid-sized SUV that will take on the Model Y directly with a sub-$50,000 price. Lucid's SVP of Design and Brand explicitly refers to three upcoming mass market EVs, but stays mum on the category that the third vehicle will be slotting in.
A station wagon or a small pickup seem to be out of the question, so Lucid may be mulling to have a competition for the rumored cheaper Model 2 that is currently on the back burner at Tesla while it is focused squarely on the Robotaxi.
