Tesla's Robotaxi event reportedly delayed to October
Tesla's Robotaxi reveal event, originally planned for August 8th, is being delayed to October, according to Bloomberg. The company reportedly needs more time to build prototypes for the "Cybercab" Robotaxi.
The company has previously announced plans for a self-driving ride-hailing service using both customer-owned Teslas and purpose-built Robotaxis. However, the company hasn't made its intentions clear for the launch. The delayed reveal could showcase a functional Robotaxi or just a design concept - no one knows.
Tesla's ability to create and safely deploy autonomous vehicles is a major question mark. Despite promises of self-driving Teslas being imminent for years, the company hasn't been able to deliver. This could be a problem as a significant portion of Tesla's market value is based on its image as an AI and tech leader, not just a car manufacturer.
Tesla was supposed to use the Model 2's manufacturing platform shared with the Robotaxi to design and launch a final vehicle, but that hasn't happened - not yet, at least. Although it's worth noting that regulations around Full Self Driving are still quite strict, which could pose a hurdle for the company. Beijing, on the other hand, is relaxing regulations pertaining to Full Self Driving, so it's likely that Robotaxis are making their way to China first. Tesla's reliance solely on cameras for autonomous driving is also a concern for some experts.
