Ford brings Capri back as electric SUV that loses the price war to Tesla Model Y
Ford sold nearly two million of its souped-up Capri sedans and decided to resurrect the model by anointing a Polestar lookalike electric crossover with the legendary naming.
The 2024 Ford Capri is an electric SUV built on the VW ID.5 platform, with all the manufacturing cost savings and design limitations that Volkswagen's MEB vehicles entail.

The new Capri crossover comes in RWD single motor or AWD dual-motor trims, with the base model coming with a rather modest 52 kWh battery. It is also the cheapest, but its release is reserved for next year, while in 2024 Ford will launch the RWD Capri with larger, 77 kWh battery, and €51,450 starting price for 389 miles of range.
For comparison, there is a Tesla Model Y version with similar 600+ km WLTP range in Europe, where the new Capri will be sold, and it costs less than the Ford. The Capri is shorter than the Model Y, too, and really resembles a Polestar 2, despite Ford's claims that its designers have tried to convey the original looks.
Ford's resurrected Capri can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 6.4 seconds with the single 282 HP electric motor, while the more expensive AWD Capri Premium version does it in 5.3 seconds with a combined output of its two motors at 335 HP. This one comes with a bit larger 79 kWh battery that returns up to 367 miles of range on Europe's WLTP cycle, which is more generous than the EPA ratings.
Other than the price tag and the Capri design, Ford does most things right with its new electric crossover, introducing ample safety, autonomy, and vehicle comfort features as standard, such as a massaging driver seat, a cyclist-aware door opening, or a secret locker behind the touchscreen.
Now the only variable that remains for the new Ford Capri is how it will fare not only against the Tesla Model Y, but against Ford's own Mach-E, too, which is also being sold in Europe to the same market segment.
