French firm Green Navy's 'Prometeo' is Europe's first electro-hydrogen propulsion-powered catamaran
French company Green Navy has unveiled Prometeo, a modern catamaran powered by electro-hydrogen propulsion. Electro-hydrogen propulsion is cutting edge tech that combines electric propulsion with hydrogen fuel cells. In this system, hydrogen is used as the primary energy source. It undergoes a chemical reaction within a fuel cell to produce electricity, which then powers electric motors.
By replacing traditional fossil fuels with clean energy, Prometeo is offering a zero-emission solution for both passenger and cargo transport. The catamaran's lightweight design, coupled with advanced technology, results in a silent, odorless, and vibration-free operation, the company claims.
The maritime industry has been dealing with environmental challenges for a while now, including water pollution, habitat destruction, and air quality issues. Prometeo is presenting itself as a promising alternative to conventional ships, which contribute a significant amount to greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.
Green Navy's collaboration with SECO Marine is a testament to the growing interest in hydrogen as a clean energy source for marine applications. Prometeo will become a part of a burgeoning ecosystem of sustainable transportation solutions, including electric vehicles, hydrofoiling ships - tech that will hopefully make a huge difference in the coming years.
Prometeo has a release planned in spring 2025. As Green Navy CEO Charles Cardi stated, the catamaran's commercial viability and potential to drive industry change are evident in the strong support it has garnered.
