Polestar has finally revealed details regarding the US release of the Polestar 2 electric fastback, and while there is a little disappointment to be had in the form of a price increase, upgraded motors, increased range, and recent OTA software updates make it sting less. While the base price and specs almost make it a viable challenger for the Tesla Model Y, missing out on federal tax incentives hurts Polestar's viability as a Tesla alternative — unless you plan on leasing, that is.

Polestar has officially unveiled details surrounding the US-bound 2024 Polestar 2, including pricing, trim levels, and standard equipment. While a small price increase has been applied, there are a number of included features and performance upgrades that Polestar is relying on to lessen the sticker shock associated with the arrival of the new EV.

As detailed before, the Polestar 2 will be available in both a single-motor RWD version and a dual-motor long range AWD version, both of which now pack more horsepower and range than their predecessors. The long range rear-wheel-drive variant has 299 hp and an EPA estimated range of 320 miles, while the long range AWD version delivers 421 hp with a very respectable 276 miles of EPA range.

In terms of pricing, the Polestar 2 with the single-motor drivetrain has an MSRP of US$49,900, while the dual-motor trim comes in at US$55,300. Along with the price increase, the Polestar 2 now comes with blind Spot Information System with steer assist, Cross Traffic Alert with brake support, park assist sensors, 360-degree cameras, and auto-dimming door mirrors all as standard equipment.

The AWD trim also comes with Polestar's Pilot Pack, which was previously a US$3,400 add-on, that includes Pilot Assist driver assistance aids, Adaptive Cruise Control, Emergency Stop Assist, Rear Collision Warning and Mitigation, and LED front fog lights with cornering function. The AWD version of the Polestar 2 is also rear-wheel biased, which means it's well-suited for spirited driving.

While the Polestar 2 now costs US$1,500 and US$3,400 more than last year's US models, the spec and range improvements may make it worthwhile, especially for those looking to lease, since that's the only way to take advantage of the US federal tax incentives under the new IRA. For comparison, the AWD Performance Tesla Model Y comes in at US$54,490 before the US$7,500 EV tax incentives, and it delivers 303 miles of range. The Long Range Model Y, though, undercuts the AWD Polestar 2 significantly, despite its larger size and slightly longer 320-mile range.
