An engineering report centring on an early CyberTruck design was leaked, revealing that the electric pickup truck started life with elementary automotive design flaws, from a leaky cabin to shoddy brakes and terrible steering. An automotive engineer commented that the oversights were "astounding," and that the flaws in the design were rudimentary design challenges that every car manufacturer should have solved easily.

After the Tesla Files leak that ended up in the hands of a German publication, journalists and interested parties have been scouring the data for interesting information about the goings-on in the American auto maker's day-to-day operations. Among the leaked data was an engineering report concerning an early "alpha" version of the Cybertruck, according to WIRED, and the report potentially reveals just why the electric pickup truck has taken so long to come to market.

The leaked Cybertruck engineering report, dated January 25, 2022, details how the early version of the Cybertruck, had issues with a leaky cabin, brake, suspension, and handling problems, and noise levels in the cabin. An anonymous automotive engineer's take on the report is that the issues it was having were "astounding," and that he was "blown away that they would be struggling so much with the basics."

Now, Tesla may have a reputation for quality control issues, but it's highly likely these rudimentary issues will have been resolved by the time the Cybertruck launches later in 2023. Recent sightings of the electric pickup truck have seen it tackling some challenging terrain — albeit with limited success — and in a nearly-complete state at a Tesla investor conference. It's even been spotted doing some aggressive testing in recent months.

The report does shed some light onto why the Cybertruck has been delayed so many times, though. The January 2022 timing of Musk's announcement of a 2023 release is suspiciously close to the report date, as well. Granted, the Cybertruck is a completely new platform and vehicle type for Tesla, so it stands to reason that there would be some initial teething pains, but the initial planned release date of around 2021 makes it seem like the issues required far more engineering work than anticipated. Of course, the global pandemic couldn't have helped matters, either.
