Alfa Romeo poised to relive Boaty McBoatface in teaser for electric compact SUV
The Alfa Romeo Tonale was the brand's first entry into the electric vehicle market, but the Italian marque seems to be going all-in with the next addition to its electric portfolio. Alfa Romeo recently teased the next addition to its electric portfolio on Instagram, and it will allegedly be the brand's smallest SUV to date. Not only will it be the first fully-electric Alfa Romeo, the upcoming SUV is also intended as a "Sports Urban Vehicle," rather than a sports utility vehicle.
Some speculation has suggested the new Alfa Romeo will share a platform with the Jeep Avenger, suggesting that it will have a fairly compact wheelbase of around 2,540 mm (100) and a bumper-to-bumper length of 4,064 mm (160 inches). If the Jeep Avenger powertrain is ripped of verbatim, Alfa's new EV will have somewhere in the neighbourhood of 400 km of WLTP and run on a front-wheel-drive motor with 115 kW at its disposal.
Given that Alfa Romeo already has an SUV, sedan, and a compact SUV, it's entirely possible that the unnamed vehicle will be some form of hatchback or coupé. Whatever it is, we'll find out by the middle of 2024, since that is Alfa Romeo's planned release date.
In the teaser, Alfa Romeo asks its fans to guess what its next vehicle will be called, but a press release reveals that Alfa is actually using the post to ask for fan suggestions. Whether it will actually take any of these naming suggestions to heart is another story entirely. While some of the comments are suggesting sensible names, like "Junior," others are suggesting the brand re-purpose the Guilietta brand, and at least one commenter artfully suggested "Alfa McRomeo."
