Likely Nikon Z8 release date announced in teaser for upcoming online launch event
An event announcement posted to a number of Nikon's landing pages sets a launch date of May 10, 2023 for a mystery new addition to Nikon's lineup. No further information is provided about what's launching, but a sneaky hidden detail indicates that the online launch event may introduce Nikon's rumoured Z8 full-frame camera.
The announcement reads "ARE YOU READY?" in large yellow lettering, echoed by repeating text under the main banner. In the final line of the text outline, keen eyes will notice that the number "8" replaces the question mark. Speculators at the likes of Nikon Rumors theorise that this detail is confirmation of the launch of the Z8. It makes little sense to tease a minor product launch, so this theory holds some water.
So far, there has not been a lot of concrete information about Nikon's Z8 camera, but the leaks and rumours we have seen seem to indicate that it will bridge the gap between the extant Z7 II and the flagship Z9. If correct, the leaked Z8 will be headed for the prosumer market in a smaller form factor, closer to the Z7 than the Z9, and possibly even the same body as the Z 7II. It's also been rumoured that the Z8 will feature a full-frame, 45.7-MP stacked CMOS sensor — the same as the one in the Z9 — but will have a slightly cut-back feature set compared to the Z9.
A camera that fills the sizeable gap between the US$5,499 Z9 and the US$2,599.95 Z7 II would be an attractive prospect for many hybrid shooters, especially if the improved EVF and autofocus leaks are true. Under the online launch event announcement, Nikon placed a "Get notified" button you can use to add the event to your calendar or sign up for the newsletter.
