IFA 2024 | Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 AMD: Strix Point comes to the compact business ThinkPad
2024 was a rather strange year for the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s. The compact business laptop with its 14 inch screen came out as the T14s Gen 5 exclusively with Intel Lunar Lake. Only a short while later, Lenovo pushed out the ThinkPad T14s Gen 6, which was only available with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite - until now. At IFA, the long awaited new AMD variant of the ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 with Strix Point gets its announcement. It is the first ThinkPad laptop with Zen 5.
Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G6: T series now with glass touchpad
Since Lenovo completely redesigned the ThinkPad T14s with the Gen 5 model, there are no huge changes in this area. The ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 AMD weighs around 1.3 kg, with the chassis made out of the well known combination of aluminum and magnesium as well as Carbon fiber plastic.
There is one small change to the physical design that is not apparent when you see the device, but when you touch it: Instead of Mylar plastic, Lenovo uses a glass surface for the touchpad now. Until now, this was exclusive to the more expensive Thinkpad X1 series.
AMD Strix Point for the first time in the Lenovo ThinkPad
As for the AMD ThinkPads up until now, they only were available with Zen 4 in the form of Ryzen 8000. With the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 AMD, things change. Ryzen AI comes to the enterprise laptops. Lenovo only specifies "next generation Ryzen AI Pro", as the Pro chips from AMD have not been unveiled yet. One possible option might be the already leaked AMD Ryzen AI 7 Pro 360.
The AMD CPUs are paired with up to 64 GB LPDDR5-7500 memory, which is soldered to the board. The battery has a capacity of 58 Wh, like it does for the other T14s models. Somewhat more restricted is the choice of the screen options, as Lenovo only puts WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) screen options in the specifications table. It is possible that other options will follow later in time. Wi-Fi 7 is integrated into the ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 AMD and the two USB4 ports are Thunderbolt certified, a first for a Ryzen ThinkPad.
