In my opinion, the 14-inch version of the IdeaPad S540, or even the recently launched Asus VivoBook S431, makes a lot of sense for users who want something thin and lightweight. Lenovo's new Legion Y540 and Asus' TUF Gaming series, on the other hand, make a lot of sense for users who want mid-range PC gaming. At a rather steep price of Rs 66,990, the IdeaPad S540 is neither here nor there. It's a large 15.6-inch mainstream laptop that's trying hard to fit into the Thin and Light category. It's a confused device, frankly.

From what we’ve noticed during all extensive tests, we can comfortably say that Lenovo was… kind of right in their statement on the sticker. We are talking about the one, which says “Beyond expected performance”. Currently, the Ideapad S540 (15) is one of the best GeForce MX250-equipped laptops we have had in our hands. What is interesting about it? Well, it is only 17mm thick and weighs just 1.80 kg. Oh yes, and it is built out of aluminum – not plastic.

Overall, I really liked the Lenovo IdeaPad S540. At around Rs 65,000, it’s very reasonably priced, and it’s sanely and sensibly specced. If it’s an unpretentious workhorse that you’re on the lookout for, I really can’t think of a better option in this price range.

This 14-inch IdeaPad S540 has what it takes to be one of the most popular budget ultrabooks of its generation. It's built well and looks nice, it gets an IPS screen and a fast and quiet backlit keyboard, it handles everyday activities without hiccups and lasts for a few hours of use on a charge. Finally, but definitely not least, this is excellently priced in most regions, which should greatly help potential buyers look past its quirks. The detailed review below will help you figure those out, tell you were this laptop shines and where it compromises.

While the Ideapad S540 didn’t seem to have any significant issues, we wouldn’t place it amongst the best of its class. We don’t mean to discredit Lenovo, as we were very satisfied with the performance of the Ryzen 5 3500U processor and RX Vega 8 GPU, that is inside of it (and for sure we are going to see even higher figures from the Ryzen 7 3700U/RX Vega 10 combo).

Lenovo Ideapad S540-15IWL 81SW001SMH
With the successful launch of the ThinkPad series back in the year of 2005, Lenovo has garnered much reputation for being one of the competitive contenders in the Asia Pacific region for being more than capable of manufacturing business-oriented laptops that exceeded the expectations of many. With initial suspicions quenched and doubts no longer encroaching on the horizon, Lenovo’s continuous effort in expanding the ThinkPad series has led to the eventual creation of the IdeaPad series, which is garnered more towards a consumer-friendly laptop model rather than one that is used solely for business purposes. The Lenovo IdeaPad S540-15IWL 81SW001SMH laptop model is one such established example. The IdeaPad series revolves around the very idea of what would the ThinkPad potentially be if it weren’t primarily designed for businessmen. With much evident support pouring in from across the borders, the Lenovo IdeaPad S540-15IWL 81SW001SMH came into the laptop scene bearing promises to retain whatever that is prized in the ThinkPad series and repackage them on a consumer-based trajectory. To start this off, the Lenovo IdeaPad S540-15IWL 81SW001SMH by itself only measures up to 14 inch in length alone, thus making it one of the most practical and portable laptop options for users to commute around with. The 14 inch size promotes both lightweight and convenience properties for the Lenovo IdeaPad S540-15IWL 81SW001SMH, but that does not undermine its excellence even the slightest. The Lenovo IdeaPad S540-15IWL 81SW001SMH is more than capable of being up to par in the conduct of heavy-duty performance thanks to the inclusion of powerhouse core chips such as the Intel Core i5-8265U processor and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q variant graphics adapter. The Intel Core i5-8265U processor has recorded a performance rate clocking at a base speed of 1.6 GHz which can peak at up to 3.9 GHz at maximum Turbo frequency. This is to be considered to be rather substantial for users at the price point that the Lenovo IdeaPad S540-15IWL 81SW001SMH laptop model has to offer. However, it is rather interesting to learn that this particular model comes equipped with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q variant graphics adapter. This graphics card paves the way towards the world of elite gaming for the Lenovo IdeaPad S540-15IWL 81SW001SMH model due to the graphics card’s high competency in rendering realistic graphics with an overall better and improved visual. The inclusion of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q unit stays true to Lenovo’s vision in centering the IdeaPad lineup towards a consumer-oriented direction, which enables casual users to experience leisure gaming at a very competent price point. The 15-inch all-rounder brings a GTX 1650 Max-Q in an elegant, slim aluminum case and is able to draw some attention with many positive values in the test. These include the bright, high-contrast display and the fast SSD, for example. However, it also shows a significant weakness.

While the Lenovo IdeaPad S540 does not take any new steps when it comes to the design, it is equipped with the AMD Ryzen 5 3550H, which is supposed to offer better long-term performance. Combined with a big battery, the 13.3-inch laptop looks like a promising companion for longer work days. In this review, we will determine what else the small bundle of energy is capable of.

A very well executed machine. This is what best describes the Ideapad S540 (13). Of course, you are going to find some shortcomings like the lack of Thunderbolt connection, a modest I/O overall, and soldered memory. However, there are some fresh ideas implemented here, like the USB Type-C charging, excellent hinge, which provides an easily openable lid with a single hand and a stable position when opened.

Overall, the Lenovo IdeaPad S540 ticks a lot of the boxes professionals and students look for in a laptop. It offers excellent performance, fast storage, 1080p display, long battery life, and portability. On the flip side, you do have mediocre display quality, poor GPU performance, and limited ports.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.
In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.
In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce MX250: Successor of the MX150 and still based on the same Pascal GP108 chip (similar to the desktop GT 1030) but with higher clock speeds. Available in two versions, a normal 25 Watt version and a low power version with 10 Watt TDP and reduced performance. The 25 Watt version e.g. offers a 21% higher boost clock than the old MX150 leading to a 5% performance gain.
AMD Vega 10: Integrated graphics card of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 10 CUs (=640 shaders) and a clock of up to 1300 MHz.
AMD Vega 8: Integrated graphics card of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 8 CUs (= 512 shaders) and a clock of up to 1100 MHz.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q: Mid range dedicated graphics card for thin and light laptops based on the GTX 1650 but with reduced clock speeds and power consumption. Uses the Turing architecture (TU117 chip in 12nm FFN) but without Raytracing or Tensor cores.
AMD Vega 8: Integrated graphics card of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 8 CUs (= 512 shaders) and a clock of up to 2.100 MHz.
AMD Vega 6: Integrated graphics adapter of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 6 CUs (= 384 shaders) and a clock of up to 1,500 MHz.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Mobile: Mid range dedicated graphics card for laptops based on the desktop GTX 1650 and therefore the Turing architecture (TU117 chip in 12nm FFN) without raytracing and Tensor cores. Available with 896 and 1024 shaders.

Intel Core i5:
i5-8265U: Whiskey Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Kaby Lake but produced in a further improved 14nm++ process). The four cores are clocked between 1.6 and 3.9 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading.
AMD Picasso (Ryzen 3000 APU):
R7 3700U: A laptop-grade APU featuring four Zen+ cores clocked at 2.3 GHz to 4 GHz and a Vega graphics adapter with 10 CUs clocked at up to 1,400 MHz.
R5 3500U: Mobile Quad-Core APU using Zen+ cores clocked at 2.1 to 3.7 GHz and a Vega iGPU with 8 CUs running at up to 1200 MHz.
R5 3550H: Mobile Quad-Core APU using Zen+ cores clocked at 2.1 to 3.7 GHz and a Vega graphics adapter with 8 CUs clocked at up to 1,200 MHz.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
i7-8565U: Whiskey Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Kaby Lake but produced in a further improved 14nm++ process). The four cores are clocked between 1.8 and 4.6 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading.
Intel Comet Lake:
i5-10210U: Comet Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Whiskey Lake and still produced in 14nm++). The CPU cores can clock between 1.6 and 4.2 GHz (all 4 cores 3.9 GHz max.) with HyperThreading (8 threads). The integrated memory controller supports LPDDR4-2933 and using cTDP up/down the performance can be adjusted by the OEM (10 - 25 Watt possible, 15W default). Compared to the faster i5-10510U, the level 3 cache was reduced from 8 to 6 MB.
i7-10510U: Comet Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Whiskey Lake and still produced on 14nm++). The CPU cores can clock between 1.8 and 4.9 GHz (all 4 cores 4.3 GHz max.) with HyperThreading (8 threads). The integrated memory controller supports DDR4-2666 and using cTDP up/down the performance can be adjusted by the OEM (10 - 25 Watt possible, 15W default).
AMD Renoir (Ryzen 4000 APU):
R7 4800U: Mobile Octa-Core APU using Zen 2 cores clocked at 1.8 to 4.2 GHz and a Vega graphics card with 8 CUs clocked at up to 1750 MHz. Compared to the faster 4800H, the 4800U has a lower TDP and base clock, but the graphics card is faster.
R5 4600U: Mobile Hexa-Core APU using six Zen 2 cores clocked at 2.1 to 4 GHz and a Vega graphics card with 6 CUs clocked at up to 1500 MHz.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
