Lego Racers from 1999 returns as free web browser game with online multiplayer

Lego Racers, the 1999 arcade-style kart racer, has returned as a fan-made remake that runs directly in a web browser. Renamed "Step On It" for legal reasons, the project recreates the original game, including its themed tracks and racers based on classic Lego properties such as Pirates, Adventurers and Space. The remake follows decompilation work from the isledecomp community, which also contributed to the Lego Island browser project.

Step On It also addresses several limitations of the original release. Up to six players can compete online across the game's circuits, while all original content is available right away rather than requiring players to unlock tracks and racers. Other improvements include rebalanced items and shortcuts, alongside more aggressive AI opponents. These additions give the remake a more modern multiplayer focus while retaining the underlying game.

The original Lego Racers was hardly a balanced racing game, with its power-up system allowing for particularly effective shortcuts and exploits. Yet this chaotic design was also part of its appeal. Hence, the remake thus offers an interesting alternative to newer Lego racing games by preserving the 1999 experience.
