Japanese watchmaker puts real meteorite into new automatic watch limited to just 100 pieces

A piece of meteorite is an unusual starting point for a wristwatch, but Japanese watchmaker Knis has made it the centrepiece of its latest limited edition. The Kyoto-based company has launched a fifth-anniversary automatic watch featuring a dial made from genuine Muonionalusta meteorite.
The watch went on sale in Japan on 2 November 2026, priced at ¥108,900 (including tax). It is also listed at £622 on the manufacturer's UK storefront, which advertises free international DHL shipping.
A dial with a history stretching far beyond Earth
The most distinctive feature is the meteorite dial, which displays a network of intersecting crystalline patterns rather than a conventional painted or textured finish.
Knis identifies the material as Muonionalusta meteorite, discovered in Sweden. Its characteristic Widmanstätten pattern formed through extremely slow cooling of iron-rich material. Because the crystalline structure varies across the meteorite, the pattern visible on each dial is different.
The company has paired the dial with a rose-gold-coloured stainless steel case and a crocodile-leather strap. The anniversary edition brings Knis back to where it all began, with a fresh take on the meteorite watch that launched the brand five years ago.
At approximately 38 mm in diameter and 11 mm thick, the case is relatively compact. The watch weighs around 73 g and features sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating.

Japanese automatic movement and 100-piece production run
Inside is a Japanese Miyota Calibre 8215 automatic movement, which also supports manual winding. Knis specifies a maximum power reserve of 42 hours and a hacking seconds function, allowing the seconds hand to stop while the time is being set.
The watch also offers 10 ATM water resistance, a screw-in, see-through caseback and a folding clasp. Assembly takes place in Japan, and Knis includes a one-year warranty.
Each watch carries an individual serial number, with the anniversary edition available through the Knis online store and its Sanjo Teramachi flagship shop in Kyoto. Only 100 will be made, and each has its own unique pattern on a dial made from a genuine piece of outer space.
