Intel i9-12900K Alder Lake CPU tested in Ashes of the Singularity, results suggest significant gains over AMD’s Ryzen 9 5950X

Inconclusive results, but Alder Lake does appear to be faster at least for 1440p gaming.

AotS might not be a popular benchmarking tool due to its convoluted results, yet its reliance on CPU power seems to be great for highlighting Intel's Alder Lake performance. It is still unclear if the i9-12900K benefits from some overclocking treatment in this case, but the Alder Lake processor does seem to be 39% faster than the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X when coupled with an RTX 3080 running at High_1440p settings.

The first relevant Alder Lake benchmarks we were reporting on a few weeks ago only included synthetic general purpose and content production benchmarks, so we could not really get a feel of how Intel’s 12th gen processors get around gaming loads. Meanwhile, the i9-12900K popped up in the Ashes of the Singularity database, and it looks like Alder Lake is set to take AMD’s current Ryzen 5000 lineup to the cleaners.

Now, obviously, AotS is not the go-to gaming benchmark suite since it tends to rely more on the CPU side instead of the GPU side, but this shortcoming should actually help highlight the Alder Lake CPU performance in this case. Granted, there still are a few caveats with these results, as we cannot really tell the exact AotS test presets especially when custom scenarios are used, plus the CPU and GPU frequencies are not reported.

User foxed.in provided a bunch of tests for an i9-12900K + RTX 3080 combo with resolutions ranging from 1080p to 1440p. Most of these are custom, but there are some identified as High_1080p/1440p. Tom’s Hardware points out that there is a High_1440p test where we can see the exact benchmark settings used for the i9-12900K that scores 14,000 points. If we search for the same settings and same GPU for a Ryzen 9 5950X, the score goes down to 10,100 points, so that would be an almost 39% difference in favor of the Alder Lake chip. However, the AotS database also shows a Crazy_1440p result for a Ryzen 9 5950X + RX 6800 XT GPU combo scoring 13,000 points, which could mean that AotS can be heavily influenced by CPU / GPU overclocking,

While these AotS results remain somewhat convoluted, the single-core improvements hinted at with the previous Geekbench 5 tests suggest that Alder Lake may indeed be faster in games, although that 39% figure might prove a bit too optimistic. We should be getting more conclusive results (preferably from 3DMark tests) as we get closer to the late October Alder Lake launch.
