Humane Ai Pin launches as new smartphone alternative ahead of 'early 2024' shipments
Humane has now fully detailed the Ai Pin, its first attempt at a smartphone disruptor. As a last-minute leak suggested, the Ai Pin starts at US$699, making it more expensive than most smartphones. However, despite price matching Google's Pixel 8, a US$24 monthly subscription increases its first-year cost to nearly US$1,000.
As expected, Humane has equipped the Ai Pin with hardware commonly found on modern smartphones, such as a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, microphones for capturing voice commands, a 13 MP ultra-wide-angle camera (120 °FOV) and a 3D depth sensor. Additionally, the Ai Pin has 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, GPS and LTE connectivity, albeit only via an eSIM.
Moreover, Humane has included replaceable batteries, with a smaller internal battery on hand to facilitate external battery hot-swapping. The Ai Pin forgoes any traditional app support too, with Humane leveraging 'AI experiences' from the likes of Google, Microsoft, Open AI and Tidal to provide key services. Arguably, a Laser Ink Display is the Ai Pin's most futuristic feature though, which projects a 720p image and supports gesture inputs for controlling the Ai Pin's UI.
For now, it appears that the Ai Pin is a US exclusive, with Humane offering no indication as to when the device will be available globally. Also, while Humane will start taking pre-orders on November 16, it has only committed to shipping orders in 'early 2024'. In other words, it remains unclear when early Ai Pins will reach customers.
