The Huawei MateBook Pro S is one of the most exciting laptops of the year for frequent travelers, because despite its exceptionally bright 14.2-inch 3:2 display and decent battery capacity, the laptop weighs only 798 grams – one-third less than the Apple MacBook Air.

Although the brand-new Huawei MateBook Pro S is about half a millimeter thicker than the Apple MacBook Air ($1,250 on Amazon) at 11.9 millimeters, it is a full 35 percent lighter at 798 grams. Huawei has still managed to include a larger display and even a larger battery.

The MateBook Pro S is equipped with a 14.2-inch OLED display in a 3:2 aspect ratio. The screen has a resolution of 3,120 x 2,080 pixels, a refresh rate of 120 Hz, and an impressive HDR peak brightness of 1,600 nits. The laptop is powered by a Huawei HiSilicon Kirin XE90 ARM chip with nine cores and boost clock speeds of up to 2.75 GHz. The battery has a capacity of 54 Wh and charges via USB-C at up to 66 watts. Huawei claims a battery life of up to 18 hours when playing videos.

Aside from its presumably rather modest performance, the selection of ports is likely the MateBook Pro S’ biggest compromise. Huawei has included only two USB-C ports, which support data transfer rates of up to 5 Gbit/s, only the port on the right side supports a 4K monitor at a maximum of 60 Hz. At least Huawei has included a backlit keyboard and a multitouch trackpad with stylus support. The MateBook Pro S features four speakers, six microphones, a 1,080p camera on both the front and back, and a fingerprint sensor integrated into the power button.

Pricing and availability

The Huawei MateBook Pro S with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD is priced at ¥7,999 ($1,180). For the version with 24 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD, Huawei is asking ¥10,499 ($1,550). Huawei also offers a Collector’s Edition featuring 32 GB of RAM and a higher-quality chassis finish for ¥14,999 ($2,220). Huawei has not yet confirmed when or at what price the laptop will be released in the rest of the world.
