The P50 Pocket launched with the double-barrelled look of its series' camera hump, although one of its rear-panel circles is a cover display that matches its actual shooter housing in size. Interesting as this might have been as a design choice, it now seems Huawei intends to ditch the look in future clamshell foldables.
The OEM has just registered a new device with the Chinese regulator TENAA that has the model number BAL-AL80 and an undeniably horizontally-folding form-factor. The smartphone looks a lot like the P50 Pocket - except that its camera hump is now set into a cover screen that takes over nearly the entire front half of the rear panel.
The rest of the apparently upcoming Huawei clamshell drops the P50 Pocket's flashy, metallic finish options for a finish that might well be matte rather than patterned and shiny. Its rich blue or navy shades might appeal to a range of customers nonetheless.
TENAA has yet to complete all fields of its new registration, although it has revealed that the new Huawei device will launch with HarmonyOS and a lack of 5G. It also indicates that the BAL-AL80 has a total of 5 cameras and has a slightly larger 4,260mAh battery compared to the P50 Pocket.
A launch date for this potential new Huawei foldable remains unclear; however, the launch of others such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 and Moto Razr 2022 might push the OEM to debut it sooner rather than later.
