Huawei Mate 30 Pro
The Huawei Mate 30 Pro is a smartphone that claims to be the breakthrough of visual boundaries, the exploration of photography and videography, the liberation of power and speed, and the innovation of interaction by Huawei. As for design, Huawei has created the image of wild nature with sophisticated design. The colors radiate in every light and shadow reflecting the splendid milky way, graceful violet, treasured emerald and mysterious night. Color options available are Orange, Forest Green, Cosmic Purple, Space Silver, Emerald Green and Black. Expanding from edge to edge, the ultra-curved screen extends the horizon for an ultimate immersive viewing experience. The encircled glass with 88-degree ultra curves gives users a natural touch and hold in the palm of your hand. More than a piece of artwork, it is pursuing the balance of aesthetics and comfort. The ultra-curved screen edges offer a wider area for interactions, which also replace the physical buttons for a seamless design. Users can naturally adjust the volume or enjoy quad-finger game control with this innovative side-touch interaction. The quad-camera of the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro 5G is embraced by the halo ring. It is a perfect fusion of reflection and refraction. The 40 MP Cine Camera and 40 MP SuperSensing Camera allows users to record Ultra-Low-Light, Ultra-Slow Motion and Ultra-Wide-Angle-Time-lapse videos. The 8 MP Telephoto Camera has 3x optical zoom, 5x hybrid zoom and up to 30x digital zoom feature. It will bring the far-away surprises to user’s eyes. Furthermore, the 3D Depth Sensing Camera brings professional Bokeh effects to portrait photos and videos. Inherited by the powerful DNA of Mate, the battery is upgraded to 4,500 mAh (typical value), which can easily support one-day requirement. Benefit from the chipset’s improved power efficiency and intelligent power management system to power up even longer than before. Fast charge is also available via HUAWEI SuperCharge. As the world’s 1st flagship 5G SoC powered by 7nm+ EUV2, the Kirin 990 5G achieved significant performance with lower power consumption. It supports SA and NSA network architectures, peak download speed and wide frequencies of FDD and TDD. The brand new architecture of Big-Core plus Tiny-Core NPU vastly improves AI capability for intelligent life. Paired with 8 GB RAM + 256 GB ROM, the Mate 30 Pro ensure maximum performance, even in multitasking and gaming. Conclusively, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro has great design, camera, performance and battery life. However, the lack of Google Apps in the smartphone might set off some users who uses Google apps on their phone heavily. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

With the Mate 30 Pro, Huawei is focusing on videography for the first time and has not only given its high-end smartphone the latest Kirin SoC but also a second 40 MP sensor for ultra-wide-angle photos and video recordings. Additionally, the Chinese company has stuffed all the cutting-edge technology into this smartphone, or at least that which it can get hold of, anyway.
Update: Wi-Fi test with new reference router added

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G has a serviceable but not particularly impressive selfie camera. Exposure is accurate and noise is low in good light, but the camera often drops the ball with skin tones, crucially important for good selfies, and color in stills is generally a bit unsaturated. The bokeh mode is capable, but the camera’s shallow depth of field introduces blur in more distant subjects, including faces in group shots. The phone does better with front camera video, capturing a wide dynamic range and managing pleasant colors, but it’s still not quite up there with the very best. If you shoot only the occasional selfie, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G will get the job done, but if you are really into front camera usage, other phones offer a more compelling performance, especially in the Mate 30 Pro 5G’s price range.

Mate 30 Pro has real appeal in spite of its limitations, and perhaps because of them. The missing Google apps prevent us from being able to recommend it, but there's no doubt this is a genuine, unapologetic flagship phone.

For the last few weeks, I've lived in the Huawei ecosystem. My phone was either the P40 Pro or the Mate 30 Pro, my smartwatch was the Watch GT 2, and I even used a MediaPad for my tablet. This path is never one that I regret. I'm not sure I've ever been sent a Huawei product that I didn't like. The ecosystem all works together too, with Huawei Share enabling seamless file transfer.

The Mate 30 Pro is a hard sell. Huawei did everything right: the camera is solid, the handset feels and looks premium and the battery is excellent, but without Google Play Services the device won’t be worth it for most Canadians.

An extremely-capable all-rounder, Huawei has ensured that the Mate 30 Pro has the hardware innovation to tackle even the most potent competitors on the market. Its quad-camera may change the tide of video capture superiority against Apple, the new Kirin chipset will be able to outpace most of the current silicon on the market and the phone's battery and fast-charging chops mean it outlasts most other phones out there. The phone is tempting with free wireless earbuds and a smartwatch (while stocks last) but only if you're ok with the lack of Google Services, which for many will be a dealbreaker.

Now about its main shortcoming… There are avenues to get Google services running on the Mate 30 Pro, but it’s not something we can officially condone. You might also have seen the recent news of HUAWEI working with other Chinese smartphone makers on an alternative app distribution platform, which might make things more interesting. Still, there’s a learning curve to picking up an Android phone sans Google’s services, and that might be hard to overlook, especially when the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro costs RM3899. It’s definitely worth it for the hardware here, but whether you can accept the slight annoyance of relearning how to get apps onto an Android smartphone is entirely up to you.

The Huawei Mate30 Pro 5G comes with similar packaging as the conventional Mate30 Pro with a matte black box that contains the smartphone itself wrapped in a protective plastic sleeve, a SIM ejector pin, a Type-C pair of headphones, a protective casing as well as a 40W Super Charge fast charger and paired USB Type-C cable. The only difference that you can tell from the external packaging is the manifest sticker on the side of the box.

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro’s multimedia audio quality results are dominated by the company’s decision to equip it with only a single speaker. For starters, that means no stereo output, which greatly affects the quality of the user’s experience when playing back movies, TV shows, and music. In many cases, it will also be an issue when playing games. Having a single speaker on the bottom of the phone also means that holding the phone in the most natural landscape position for watching traditionally-formatted video puts the speaker off to one side, making the listening experience a bit unnatural because of the unbalanced sound.

I wish I could say that the Kirin 990 CPU also scored well on Geekbench 5, a benchmark we run to test a processor's efficiency. Saying it performed well would be a safe bet but, after downloading the APK for Geekbench 5 from four different sites, the app never worked. I could try searching for more Geekbench APKs, but I think this anecdote is an apt encapsulation of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro.

The Mate 30 Pro is an exceptional piece of hardware. Its quad-camera setup shoots outstanding photos, a dazzling 6.53-inch waterfall display is the centerpiece of an inspired design, and its 4,500-mAh battery goes and goes and goes. But the fiasco that is Android without full Google support makes it impossible to recommend.

The LTE version of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro was the top-ranked device for DXOMARK Camera since its launch in September 2019, thanks to excellent performance across all test areas. It has now been dethroned by the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G, which unsurprisingly delivers very similar image and video quality in most situations, but has been refined in some key areas through optimized software tuning.

Without Google mobile services, this phone isn’t very useful, and there’s little hope that it will get those services any time soon if ever. Yes, at the time of writing, there’s ways to install Google’s apps onto the Mate 30 Pro, but it’s not exactly consumer friendly, and it relies on Google not flicking the kill switch to disable its software entirely on Huawei’s smartphone. This is something it could do at any time.

While this is an incredible smartphone for all it does with cameras, battery life and design, the lack of Google apps out of the box is a massive problem. How can stores, networks, or we recommend it against the P30 Pro or a competitor? It's a success in China, but unless something dramatic changes then the Mate 30 Pro just doesn't make sense for a Google-commited audience. That's the sad truth.

Love it or hate it? Honestly, I am still filled with mixed feelings towards this smartphone. Even though the Huawei Mate 30 Pro has an impressive camera system that’s probably unmatched by any competing products in the market right now, there are quite a number of inconveniences that comes with it. At the end of the day, the question is if the phone is worth its asking price. Google services issues aside, I do have the feeling that Huawei is asking too much for a phone that is cutting several corners. The lack of stereo speakers, a better-quality screen, and a more complete camera experience (HDR processing, video quality) are I think the three main gripes about the phone. 1099€ is just too much to ask given these weaknesses.

Huawei is the second largest smartphone maker in the world, and while the majority of sales still come from its homeland, the Chinese smartphone maker is best placed to provide much needed competition for Apple and Samsung. Huawei's breakneck pursuit of new features has proven extremely enticing for phone buyers in Europe, for example, where it is closing in on second-placed Apple in terms of market share. Similarly, in Australia, Huawei has shot to a strong third position in a relatively short space of time.

It’s unfortunate that Google services have become so synonymous with Android that a (Android) phone without Google doesn’t seem complete, but the fact is that there are many other parts to this open source system that work well regardless.

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro is a high-performing flagship handset that has a breath-taking camera and an enduring battery. Minor flaws in the interface and screen quality are not deal-breakers of themselves, but the lack of Google apps on this phone (currently with no authorised workaround) make it impossible to recommend this phone.

Huawei's Mate 30 Pro is unsurprisingly potent on paper and the new focus on video from the camera experience seems like a smart move, rather than simply building on the P30 Pro's zoom capabilities. In almost every regard the phone has the ability to take on every other flagship smartphone of the moment but with the company's current predicament, it might not even get the chance.

Make no mistake, the Mate 30 Pro’s camera system is certainly a revolutionary one. By smartly incorporating two larger-than-usual sensors, Huawei has created a video-focused counterpart to the P30 Pro’s obvious photography focus ones. And the results are equally impressive. Colours are accurate, and the camera adjusts for changing exposures quickly and accurately so you no longer have the issue of colours being drastically different when moving from one camera to another. From what we’ve seen, the larger sensor of the Ultra-wide Cine camera definitely makes a difference in terms of low light capture and sensitivity. If anything, the improved slow-motion capture mode has no equal among other smartphones in the market, so that certainly puts it one rung above the rest. We’d love to see how it compares to the camera modules on other recently released smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Note10+ and the iPhone 11 Pro Max, but that will have to come in a later article after the Pixel 4 gets launched too.

The success of the Mate 20 Pro set an incredibly high bar for Huawei to clear, and I think the company managed it by the skin of their teeth. This phone doesn’t tick every box: video still has a ways to go, but the awesome detail and insane low-light performance make this my go-to when I want to take an image. If Huawei manages to fix its video issues, they could be in line for the best camera on any smartphone.

But there's no escaping the fact that with no Play Store on board and only partial Google app functionality, the Mate 30 Pro can't be recommended for anyone outside of China. In fact, actively avoiding it would be the only sensible advice. The moment Google gets the license to provide products and services to Huawei will be the moment this phone will become a true all-rounder. And you should run to the nearest store and get one - but only then. Until then, stick to the other options, there are plenty.

You have to hand it to Huawei. It could’ve made the Mate 30 Pro cheaper. There’s nothing like a nice discount to help justify a purchase. However, the Mate 30 Pro is actually more expensive than its predecessor, and on par with its biggest competitors. The message is clear: this is a genuine, unapologetic flagship phone. Take it or leave it.

With an overall DXOMARK Selfie score of 93, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro makes it into the top five in our current ranking and delivers images with good exposure and color as well as a nice texture/noise trade-off in most conditions. The fixed-focus lens means that the camera is not ideal for close-range and selfie-stick shots, and video clips could do with slightly better stabilization, but the Mate 30 Pro is capable of recording decent still and video selfies overall. This said, if the front camera is a top priority for you, some better options are available.

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro’s overall DXOMARK Camera score of 121 sets an impressive new benchmark for smartphone camera performance and is the device to beat in the second half of 2019. The new Mate does not show any real weaknesses in the camera department and delivers good still image and video quality in most situations. Its photo quality is very good across the board, but its texture/noise balance is truly outstanding, with excellent detail rendering in almost all conditions while keeping image noise at low levels. The wide-angle camera’s comparatively narrow field of view could be a criticism, but the wide-angle cam delivers good image quality; moreover, the Mate 30 Pro is one of the best for bokeh and zoom as well.

While this is an incredible smartphone for all it does with cameras, battery life and design, the lack of Google apps out of the box is a massive problem. How can stores, networks, or we recommend it against the P30 Pro or a competitor? It'll be a surefire success in China, but unless something dramatic changes then the Mate 30 Pro just doesn't make sense for a Google-commited audience. That's the sad truth.

Huawei pushes smartphone innovation beyond what we need or realise we even wanted, but not even ridiculously good photos and bewildering slow motion video can distract from the biggest issue here. In the face of adversity, Huawei has almost knocked it out the park, the proverbial ball is flying through the sky, but it looks like its heading into one of the fielder's hands. A lot of success comes down to being in the right place at the right time, which is the opposite case for the Mate 30 Pro. At this stage, don’t go chasing waterfalls, because the Mate’s future is looking uncertain.

I've been using a Chinese 4G Huawei Mate 30 Pro (model LIO-AL00), which, like all Huawei's phones sold in mainland China, lack any Google services. This phone isn't entirely representative of what Western markets will get when the Mate arrives on European shores; likely the China-specific apps will be swapped out for local alternatives, should Huawei still be unable to preload Google's apps and services.

Huawei is set to launch the Mate 30 Pro in October, starting with China and a few select European countries. Other EU areas will come through Q4. Huawei will make other announcements about the Middle East and Latin America in due course, but has promised to release it there as well. Also upcoming is the 5G version, which is likely to show up further into Q4, at least in China to begin with. The 8 GB/256 GB model will retail for 1099 Euro, with the 5G version having the same specifications for 1199 Euro.

The Mate 30 Pro is a fantastically designed smartphone. The camera is superb. The design is a decent progression from the Mate 20 Pro, and we like pretty much everything about it. But there's a massive problem with it that shouldn't be underestimated: The lack of Google apps is a big problem. How can stores, networks, or we recommend it against the P30 Pro or a competitor? As enthusiasts of tech, that makes us very sad, but it is the truth. Such bad news can probably only be mitigated by a low price. But with 799 Euros set as the current cost - and no UK price yet whatsoever - we can't see how Huawei can sell this phone in Europe effectively.

An extremely-capable all-rounder, Huawei has ensured that the Mate 30 Pro has the hardware innovation to tackle even the most potent competitors on the market. Its quad-camera may change the tide of video capture superiority against Apple, the new Kirin chipset will be able to outpace most of the current silicon on the market and phone battery and fast-charging chops mean it'll outlast most other phones out there. But outside of China, all of that effort will likely have been for nought, with the lack of Google Play Services tainting the user experience. If and when the US government revokes its ban, Huawei is ready to reinstate this much-needed features but until that point, this otherwise excellent-looking phone will likely be passed up for less politically volatile alternatives.

Huawei Mate 30
The new Huawei Mate 30 series has introduced a new range of invigorating and lustrous colors as the device’s coat of paint. The Huawei Mate 30 comes with three trendsetting color options of classic black, a fluorescent space silver, and also an alluring emerald green. Apart from that, the Huawei Mate 30 has also prolonged its battery life. The Huawei Mate 30 smartphone model can now also charge at a faster pace with a tested 40 W rate whereas wireless charging is capable for 24 W. The Huawei Mate 30 features an expanding display from edge to edge with an ultra-curved waterfall screen around the sides of the device with a measurement of 6.53-inch horizontal display for its display alone. The ultra-curved screen offers a wide area, which ultimately enhances user experience. At the same time, physical volume buttons are replaced through finger-touch on the screen by double-tapping and scrolling on screen edges from both left and right sides. One of the signature features of the Huawei Mate 30 is the quad camera lens, which has showcased both waterproofing and dust-resistance attributes. The Huawei Mate 30’s lenses have a circular module to sharpen its visualization. The camera setup for the Huawei Mate 30 comprises if an ultra-wide lens, regular lens, telephoto lens and a Time of Flight sensor for depth. The metrics of megapixels for each respective lens are marked at 40-megapixel Cine Camera, 40-megapixel SuperSensing camera, and an 8-megapixel Telephoto Camera. To ensure users can enjoy a wholesome, universal experience in using the Huawei Mate 30, the brand company has adopted touchless gesture control in which users of the Huawei Mate 30 can simply grip their hand in front of screen to capture a quick screenshot. In regards to security options, the Huawei Mate 30’s interface is capable of identifying the user’s face direction in correspondence to the prior configuration of notification settings. The Huawei Mate 30’s intelligent care system will also hide notification details on the screen preview when someone else is taking a peek on their screen. The Huawei Mate 30 comes with the latest Kirin 990 chip which features the groundbreaking technology of 5G connectivity. The theoretical peak download speeds can reach up to 2.3 Gbps and theoretical upload speeds can reach 1.25 Gbps. It is worth noting, however, that Google has previously released a clear and concise press conference statement that the Huawei series will no longer support Google applications and services due to the implementation of a trade ban. However, it is rather peculiar that Android 10 is somehow still accessible for the Huawei Mate 30 smartphone model to install other mobile applications and services. Would I recommend the HUAWEI Mate 30? To be entirely honest, it does seem like a great alternative to the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro with most of the key features here at RM1100 less. For RM2799 it has a pretty strong feature set. You still have to rely on the AppGallery for your apps, but personally i feel like that’s more of an issue when you are starting off, which Phone Clone sort of mitigates by allowing you to transfer most of the stuff from your old phone.

In a nutshell, I can recommend the Mate 30, but only to those who are willing to take the risk. If you’re not that type of person, though, then you’ll want to think hard on whether or not the phone’s good qualities will fill the hole in the smartphone experience left by the lack of Google’s official services.

As with its launch sibling, the Huawei Mate 30 is a promising high-end device tainted by the US government's ongoing umbrage with Huawei and its products. While not impossible to reinstate Google Play Services, only committed and Android-literate users will make the effort to add what most would consider 'missing features' back onto the phone's otherwise well-rounded and nicely improved software experience. If you can look beyond this shortcoming (or you're based in China where the point is moot) the Mate 30 is an excellent and more affordable alternative to the top-tier Mate 30 Pro that still has hardware capable enough to compete against most, if not all of the current flagship phone market. Until the Mate 30 makes its way to market, why not consider some solid Huawei phones that do still come with Google Play services right now? We found the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 X both excellent flagships that still stand up today, along with the superb photographic capabilities of the Huawei P30 Pro to consider.

The Huawei Mate 30 takes the core elements of the Mate 30 Pro, but forgoes some of that phone's top-end features to keep the price down. However, as with all the new Huawei phones you can't access Google's services on this handset.

Huawei has promised the US-China trade war will not affect the Mate 30 launch and indeed it didn't stop the maker from going full steam ahead with its plans. Huawei has announced the Mate 30 series on September 19 in Munich, and the new phones are looking very intriguing, with or without Google's services framework.

Huawei Mate 30 5G is bound to become the best price, top flagship configuration specifications, and unique design language. The Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G doesn’t provide a very compelling listening experience, especially for a flagship phone. In large part that is due to its mono-channel, single-speaker design. Some slight improvements in tonal response give it a small advantage over the LTE version we tested previously. The phone is a much better performer when it comes to recording audio, doing an excellent job that places it along with its LTE sibling at the top of the phones we’ve tested.
