The Honor Robot Phone is one of the most unusual smartphones of the year, because Honor mounts the main camera on a robotic arm with a gimbal that enables numerous interesting features such as star tracking. Hands-on photos now show a prototype of this unorthodox handset.

The Honor Robot Phone first appeared back in mid-October at the launch event for the Honor Magic 8 Pro. More details about the unusual concept phone are not expected until the Mobile World Congress 2026 next March, and it is still unclear whether the device will ever hit the market. Nevertheless, the first hands-on photos of an Honor Robot Phone prototype have now appeared on the Chinese social media website Weibo.

Specifically, these images come from the Honor User Carnival in China, which is where the Robot Phone was showcased behind glass, so the innovative camera was not seen in action. The smartphone was shown in black, white and gold variants, as the back features either a glass or faux leather finish depending on the color. At first glance, the rear design looks somewhat similar to the Apple iPhone 17 Pro, except for the main camera of course.

When the camera is folded in, it works like the main camera of a traditional smartphone. With the press of a button, the camera can be folded out, which apparently offer several advantages. For instance, it’s possible to take selfies with the main camera, which should provide higher quality pictures compared to the front-facing camera. On the other hand, the camera arm is motorized and equipped with a gimbal, which allows for well-stabilized video recordings.

Together with AI, the Honor Robot Phone is also intended to become a camera operator by automatically aiming the camera at a person, regardless of whether the smartphone is placed on the ground or in a chest pocket. Furthermore, the star tracking feature can align the camera with the stars for sharper long-exposure shots of the night sky. More technical details should be unveiled at MWC 2026.
