Hardkernel marks 15th anniversary with ODROID-M1S single-board computer
Hardkernel has released the ODROID-M1S, a single-board computer (SBC) that CNX Software describes as a smaller and cheaper alternative to the ODROID-M1 (curr. US$134.95 on Amazon). For reference, the ODROID-M1S measures 90 x 64 x 16 mm and weighs just 52 g with a heatsink attached, making it considerably smaller and lighter than the ODROID-M1. Hardkernel has made savings in other areas too, including the former's chipset.
According to Hardkernel, it has equipped the ODROID-M1S with the Rockchip RK3566, a quad-core ARM Cortex-A55 chipset that also has a 0.8 TOPS AI accelerator and a Mali-G52 MP2 GPU. Additionally, the company includes 64 GB of soldered eMMC flash and LPDDR4 RAM, plus slots for a MicroSD card and M.2 2280 SSDs. Please note that the latter delivers two lanes of PCIe 2.1 and not PCIe 3.0 like the ODROID-M1.
Moreover, the SBC has a single HDMI 2.0 port, three USB ports, Gigabit Ethernet and a 3.5 mm jack. As the image below shows, the ODROID-M1S features 14-pin and 40-pin GPIO headers too, both of which are optional. At launch, the new ODROID supports Android 11 AOSP, as well as Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Linux 5.10.160 and Linux 6.1.60 kernels, respectively. The ODROID-M1S starts at US$49 with 4 GB of RAM and rises to US$59 for its 8 GB of RAM variant. Please note that Hardkernel charges US$3 more for soldered GPIO headers; all SKUs come with a heatsink, case and PSU.
