FriendlyELEC CM3588: New NAS kit arrives with quad M.2 2280 slots, 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet and 16 GB RAM
FriendlyELEC has released the CM3588, a new system on module (SoM) and network-attached storage (NAS) kit based around the popular Rockchip RK3588 chipset. Please note that the FriendlyELEC CM3588 consists of a carrier board and an SoM, which the company has attempted to show in its product images. Theoretically, the latter could swapped out with a more powerful option should FriendlyELEC ever release one.
At any rate, the FriendlyELEC CM3588 SoM features four ARM Cortex-A76 CPU cores clocked at 2.4 GHz, four less powerful Cortex-A55 CPU cores restricted to 1.8 GHz and a Mali-G610 MP4 GPU. Additionally, the chipset supports up to 8K/60 FPS AVS2, H.265 and VP9 video decoding, as well as 8K/30 FPS H.264, 4K/60 FPS AV1 and 1080p/60 FPS decoding with the MPEG-2, MPEG-1, VC-1 and VP8 codecs. Moreover, the FriendlyELEC CM3588 can encode H.265 and H.264 footage at up to 8K/30 FPS.
Meanwhile, the CM3588 carrier mode has four M.2 2280 bays, a MicroSD card slot and unmounted SPI flash. Also, FriendlyELEC has included a pair of HDMI 2.1 video outputs, a single USB Type-C video output that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and a 4-lane MIPI DSI connector. Furthermore, the carrier board accepts video inputs through dedicated HDMI 2.0 and 4-lane MIPI CSI connectors.
As the images below show, the system contains various other I/O, including three USB Type-A ports and a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet connection. A 40-pin GPIO header is present too, all within a 153 x 116 x 160 mm platform. The FriendlyELEC CM3588 SoM starts at US$95 with 4 GB of RAM but no built-in storage. By contrast, FriendlyELEC charges a minimum of US$130 for the CM3588 NAS Kit, with 64 GB of eMMC flash storage for a US$15 or US$30 surcharge with 8 GB or 16 GB of RAM, respectively.
