HP Zbook 17 G4-1NL44UT

With their never-ending conquest of packing desktop performance in a portable form factor, HP recently released their latest Zbook portable workstation. For starters, the 17.3 inch variant only supports up to standard Full HD panel, which is starting to feel very peasantry in 2017 especially considering its little brother, the Zbook 15, has a 4K panel option. While an additional 4K screen option would’ve been better because of its workstation DNA, it somewhat compensates this by being an IPS panel opposed to a regular TN panel, which means better viewing angles and less washed out colors when viewing under bright conditions and odd angles, not to mention its sRGB color space rating of 96%, which is similar to the previous generation. Although this might leave certain professionals wanting more especially those in the graphic design or photography field. Moving on to the heart of the beast, the Zbook is powered by a mobile workstation Intel Xeon E3-1535M v6 processor, which is considered the top end model of the Kaby-Lake-H series of processors. It also comes with 16 GB of DDR4 RAM by default and supports up to 64 GB with all slots filled. As for storage the Zbook comes with a 1 TB hard disk and a 512 GB PCIe based SSD boot drive. This should allow for snappy bootups and responsive app loading times thanks to its fast PCIe based SSD. Along with its workstation class CPU the Zbook also packs heat in the graphics department with its Nvidia Quadro P4000 workstation GPU, which works flawlessly with professionals in managing graphics intensive workloads. Not to mention the Zbook line was designed with VR content creation in mind. One can rely on HP’s Zbook series for other workloads such as CAD, video editing and content creation. In terms of I/O the Zbook 17 G4 includes a myriad of interfaces including USB 3.0/3.1, Thunderbolt 3, VGA, HDMI, a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack, and an SD card reader. Special mention should be made that the user can charge or power the notebook through the Thunderbolt 3 port should they wish to. In addition to the above, the Zbook includes a smart card reader, Kensington lock, TPM security chip plus a fingerprint reader for added security. For wireless connectivity it's pretty much standard fare to see an Intel based solution such as the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 module and instead of a generic Realtek Gigabit Ethernet solution HP has decided to opt for Intel’s Gigabit Ethernet solution. The Zbook is also equipped with Bang & Olufsen HD audio certified speakers which provides a clear uncompromised sound. In terms of construction the Zbook is quite solid with minimal flex to the chassis. Unfortunately for the keyboard and touchpad there isn’t much to be said apart from being standard. In summary, if you are a professional looking to up the ante in terms of having a portable workhorse the HP Zbook 17 G4 should more than satisfy one's needs. Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

All in all, the ZBook 17 G4 is an elite computational workhorse that achieves workstation power once available only on the desktop (with the benefit that you can take it with you where you want to go). While it is not a machine for everybody, it is the ultimate machine for power users looking for incredibly high levels of performance. The 4K DreamColor display is a true pleasure to look at and work with, and it makes a big difference when working on color-critical assignments. It is a natural choice for those who work in media and entertainment. That lot includes filmmakers, colorists, visual-effects artists, animators, video editors, illustrators, and photo retouchers, as well as VR-content creators who require a powerful GPU for both creation and proofing. Users of Adobe Creative Suite, the AutoDesk family of products, or Maxon Cinema 4D (and other resource-hungry applications) will find in the ZBook 17 G4 the ultimate creative partner.

HP ZBook 17 G4-Y6K38EA

The HP ZBook 17 G4 DreamColor is under the Z series industrial strength workstation, which are used extensively in professional media production, engineering, energy, finance, and healthcare. As a portable powerhouse, the HP ZBook 17 G4 offers the highest levels of performance and expandability for those who simply do not want to compromise power for mobility’s sake. With its extreme level of power, the HP Zbook 17 G4 can easily serve as a desktop replacement, whether a user is on the road or in the studio. The laptop features some nice design touches, like a soft-touch finish around the edge of the lid and some magnesium-alloy internal structure, which helps keep the machine from being even heavier. Most impressive is the ZBook's rugged design, which passed MIL-STD 810G testing to withstand an array of laptop-killing circumstances, including extreme heat and cold, humidity, altitude, dust and sand, vibration, shock, and impact. With the ZBook 17 G4’s 17.3-inch screen, it is the largest machine in the ZBook line. Its spacious design and expandability are made for people looking for a big rig. That’s kind of the point of this machine: It’s a big and expandable machine with a big screen. The dimensions of the machine are 3,3 x 41,91 x 27,94 cm (1.3 x 16.5 x 11 inch). The 17.3-inch laptop has an IPS panel, which offers great viewing angles, 3,840 x 2,160 resolution and an anti-glare coating that makes it just as usable outdoors in sunlight as in a conference room. Thanks to HP's DreamColor display, the panel supports wide color gamuts and millions of colors, and it's factory-calibrated. The laptop chassis provides enough space for a full-size keyboard and numberpad, with room to spare on either side. The tile keys are comfortable to type on, with 1.55 millimeters of travel (1.5 to 2mm is typical) and an actuation weight of 69 grams. Audio is designed by Bang & Olufsen which pumps out the remarkably good sound with a noticeable high end and bass response through two speaker grills on the front of the machine. The HP ZBook 17 G4 also includes a 720p webcam and an internal microphone. On the left side of the machine is a security lock slot, an RJ-45 Ethernet port, three USB 3.0 ports, one of which is a charging port and an SD card reader, which comes in handy when transferring footage and stills from a digital camera. On the right side of the ZBook 17 G4, right next to the power connector, there are two very speedy Thunderbolt 3 ports, which provide amazing transfer rates of 40 Gbps making them perfect for connecting external GPUs, vast storage arrays, or large HP Dreamcolor displays. 3.14 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
