Google appears to be rolling out a long-requested change to Gmail, with CEO Sundar Pichai confirming the update. The feature is not widely available yet, but it could address a limitation users have lived with for years.

Google is preparing to roll out a long-requested feature that will allow users to change their primary Gmail address, according to a recent post on X, formerly Twitter, by the company’s CEO, Sundar Pichai. The update marks a major change in Google’s long-standing policy, where @gmail.com addresses were effectively permanent once created.

The new option will let users switch from one Gmail address to another while keeping their existing account data intact. This includes emails, Google Drive files, photos, and other linked services. Once changed, the previous Gmail address will remain attached to the account as an alternate email, and users will continue to receive messages sent to both addresses.

Google notes that the feature is rolling out gradually, meaning it may not be available to all users immediately. Those with access will be able to initiate the change through their account settings under the “Google Account email” section.

The change also comes with a few caveats. Users may experience minor disruptions with services such as “Sign in with Google” or Chrome sync, and Google recommends backing up data as a precaution. Additionally, while users can revert to their previous email address, they will not be able to create a new Gmail account with the same address for up to 12 months.

For years, Gmail users have had no option to modify their primary email ID without creating an entirely new account. This update addresses that limitation, offering more flexibility for users who want to update outdated or less professional email addresses without losing their data or service access.

Google has not specified a global rollout timeline yet, but with confirmation now coming directly from its CEO, global availability is likely expected in the coming weeks.
