Google aims to win over ChatGPT users with Gemini’s new chat and memory imports

Google is continuing to expand Gemini. With new import tools, the company now wants to make it easier to switch from ChatGPT and other AI apps to Gemini. This should make it possible to transfer memories, preferences and complete chat histories directly from other applications. Users would no longer have to start from scratch when switching, but could instead provide Gemini with existing context from the outset. According to Google, the new feature is intended exclusively for personal accounts and has been rolling out gradually for the Gemini app since March 26, 2026.
Importing memories works via a simple workaround: Gemini provides a suggested prompt in the settings, which users insert into their current AI app. That app then creates a summary of important information, which is copied back into Gemini. This can include preferences, relationships and personal context. Google gives examples such as interests, the name of a sibling or the place where someone grew up.
Gemini analyzes this information and stores it for future conversations. Previous chat history can also be imported. For that purpose, users can upload a ZIP file containing conversations from other AI services. Earlier conversations can then be searched in Gemini and continued directly. According to Heise (in German), the file must not exceed 5 GB in size.
Anyone who works with ChatGPT or Grok should find it much easier to integrate Gemini into their workflow – or switch to Google’s service entirely. The introduction of this feature is likely an attempt by Google to lure users away from competing AI platforms. At the same time, users should ask themselves whether they are willing to entrust their personal data to yet another major corporation – assuming they have not already done so, which in Google’s case is hardly unlikely. Google notes that the import feature is currently not available to users in Europe and the UK.
