Copilot appears to have posted spam on GitHub
GitHub users have reported massive amounts of spam in over 11,000 projects. Microsoft Copilot has been inserting suggestions that reference the productivity tool Raycast. Developers are calling it advertising, but Microsoft has denied this, attributing it to a technical error that has since been fixed.

In recent days, an unusual “feature” of Microsoft’s AI assistant Copilot has sparked discussions within the GitHub community. Numerous users reported that unsolicited notes about Raycast and Copilot were appearing in their projects. Specifically, one particular message was added to over 11,000 GitHub pull requests, encouraging users to initiate Copilot tasks with Raycast on macOS or Windows computers.

Over 11,000 pull requests contain the unsolicited message "⚡Quickly spin up Copilot coding agent tasks from anywhere on your macOS or Windows machine with Raycast."

The incident was first noticed by software developer Zach Manson, who wrote about it in a blog post. Calling the situation “horrific”, he said he didn’t expect such behavior from the platform. After a member of Manson’s team had asked Copilot to correct a typo in a pull request, the AI assistant went beyond generating the requested code and added a note referencing Raycast and Copilot. Following his report, more developers came forward with similar experiences, with many considering it a form of advertising on GitHub.

Microsoft has issued a statement in response to the criticism, denying any allegations of intentional ad placement. According to the company, the incident was not part of a planned marketing campaign but rather was due to a bug in the program logic that caused these notes to appear in the wrong places. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that GitHub has no plans to integrate advertising into pull requests. The messages in question were originally intended to appear as product tips only in specific contexts. As a result of the software error, however, they were mistakenly inserted as footers in pull requests.

The “advertised” Raycast is a search tool for operating systems such as macOS and Windows. The Raycast team has likewise issued a statement denying any co-marketing partnership with Microsoft. Microsoft further confirmed that the issue has been identified and that the feature has been updated to prevent such messages from appearing in the comments of pull requests.
