Google Stadia Controller: Limited time left to switch wireless controllers to Bluetooth
The Google Stadia gaming streaming service is now long gone, having been shuttered in January 2023. Google Stadia Controllers live on though, although support to enable Bluetooth mode is coming to an end.
To recap, Google originally designed Stadia Controllers to work over Wi-Fi and in wired mode. Once the Stadia service ended, Google released a software utility, which introduced Bluetooth connectivity while disabling Wi-Fi mode.
Initially, this tool was to be taken offline at the end of 2023. Google then provided a reprieve for another year though, which is fast approaching. As it stands, it seems that Google still intends to discontinue its Bluetooth conversion utility on December 31, 2024.
For now, a few third-party options exist on GitHub, including StadiaController by GaryOderNichts. However, it appears that third-party flash tools use WebUSB rather than flashing the firmware manually. As such, it remains to be seen whether any of these tools will be useable when 2025 rolls around. Hence, we would recommend updating any Stadia Controllers to Bluetooth while you still can.
