Counterplay Games, the creators of PS5 launch exclusive Godfall, have been reportedly shut down. Counterplay joins Freejam and Toadman Interactive as the latest victims of a continued wave of closures in the industry.

Counterplay Games, the creators of Godfall, have reportedly become the latest victims of a wave of closures surging through the game industry. They join Freejam, best known for Robocraft, and Toadman Interactive, creators of Immortal: Unchained, to kick off continued game industry closures in 2025.

The report comes courtesy of PlayStation Lifestyle, who viewed and verified an anonymous LinkedIn note by an employee of Jackalyptic Games, a division of Chinese conglomerate NetEase.

The note states Counterplay Games was "disbanded" and went on to share a few LinkedIn profiles of affected employees. The company's only major release was the PS5 launch exclusive Godfall. The third-person looter shooter received a mixed reception from critics at launch.

Riding into the sunset with Counterplay Games is Freejam Games, creators of Robocraft and CardLife. The studio canceled Robocraft 2's development and sunset CardLife because "the current market conditions and the server costs required" to keep development going were unsustainable. The studio announced the shutdown through a discord message (via TechRaptor).

Enad Global 7 (EG7), the parent company of Toadman Interactive, announced via press release that it "would wind down operations in Toadman." Toadman Interactive's last major release was co-op shooter Evil V Evil, released in 2024. The company also made Immortal Unchained and assisted in the development of Warhammer: Vermintide 2, Killing Floor, and Dead Island.

According to market analysis by Statista, more than 11,250 game industry professionals lost their jobs in 2023. In 2024, that number shot up to 13,000. If the beginning of 2025 is any indication, the trend will likely continue.
