While smartphone-related sales might soon be left behind by sales of VR gear, it looks like there is still hope for tablets to get back on track. Obviously, nothing is certain, but IDC thinks detachable tablets can push the global market back up in less than three years.
The detachable segment of the market currently accounts for about 16 percent of total tablet sales, but IDC forecasts it will grow up to 31 percent in 2020. However, they also say the market has reached a peak and will continue to drop by the end of 2017. Fortunately, the increase of convertible tablets with detachable keyboards sales will bring the market back to a positive trend in 2018, claims the same source.
At last, it should be noted that IDC expects annual shipments of over 100 million tablets through 2020. The main force behind this performance is likely Amazon's $49.99 USD Fire tablet, but that remains to be seen.
